Halikarnassos (AD 98-117) AE 23 - Trajan225 viewsTrajan, 98-117 AD. AE23 (7.14g, 6h). AYTO KAI NЄP BAC TPAIANOC ΓЄ ΔA, laureate head of Trajan right / HPOΔOTOC AΛIKAPNACЄΩN, APCЄM/IA, draped bust of Herodotus right. Near VF, brown surfaces. Apparently the second known and the finer of the two. Extremely rare depiction of the historian Herodotus.

Herodotus (ca 485-425 BC) was born to a wealthy family in Halicarnassus, at the time under Persian control, although his family was exiled from the city while Herodotus was quite young and he appears to have only briefly returned to his hometown as an adult. He traveled widely and included accounts of his experiences in his famous The Histories, a description of the Graeco-Persian Wars. Cicero referred to Herodotus as “the father of history” due to his systematic investigation of historical subjects (although others have branded him “father of lies,” as Herodotus seems to have subscribed to the idea of not letting facts get in the way of a good story!).

Halikarnassos (AD 193-211) AE 30 - Septimius Severus410 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE30 (14.72g, 12h). Stratokles, archon. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Cult statue of Zeus Ascraeus facing between two trees, each surmounted by an oracular crow; name in two lines in exergue. Good VF, dark green patina with traces of orange earthen overtones. From Group CEM.

The epithet Asrcaeus (Gr. Ἀσκραίος) refers to a species of oak tree (Hesychius s.v. ἄσκρα). While the oak was an associated attribute of Zeus, the reference here may refer to a Prehellenic Carian nature deity, similar to the later mythological Dryads, or nymphs who inhabited the trees (δρύες). Apollonius Dyscolus (Historia mirabilium 13) states that a goat was sacrificed to him.

Halikarnassos (AD 238-244) AE 20 - Gordian III287 viewsGordian III, 238-244 AD. AE20 (3.30g, 8h). AVT K M ANT ΓOPΔIANOC AVΓ, laureate and draped bust of Gordian right / AΛIKAPNACCЄΩN HPOΔOTOC, bearded and draped bust of Herodotos right. Extremely Rare. VF.

This coin celebrates the greatest citizen of Halikarnassos, Herodotos, who lived there in the mid-late 5th century BC. He was a great historian and for that time a 'journalist' who would travel around the Mediterranean to 'investigate' and interview people who actually had witnessed the events he wrote about.
