AYT KAI ΘE (TP)A ΠAP YI ΘE N-EP YI (TP)A AΔPIANOC CE- (Π Π), laureate and cuirassed bust of Hadrian right, with aegis on breastplate, slight drapery on shoulder / AY CABEINA CEBACTH KAI AΔPI TAP MH(TP)OΠOΛEΩC, draped bust of Sabina right, wearing stephane; cornucopia behind. EF, minor scuffs and scratches on each bust under old tone. Exceptional portraits. From the Sierra Collection. Ex Gemini III (1/2007), lot 384.

The coinage of Tarsus, like that of the Antioch mint, gives exceptionally full titles for Hadrian, as can be witnessed on this and the previous lot. Here we find an interesting detail in the titles of Sabina as well. The AY can only stand for Augusta, which is quite redundant as the legend also names her the Greek equivalent Σεβαστή.

Tarsos (AD 117-138) Tetradrachm - Hadrian & Sabina190 viewsHadrian, with Sabina, 117-138 AD. AR Tetradrachm (13.12g, 28mm, 6h). Struck circa 131 AD. Near EF, deeply toned. Rare and excellent for issue. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 72 (5/2013), lot 653; Numismatic Fine Arts XXX (12/1992), lot 255.

A desirable issue, not only for the attractive busts but for the interesting legends; the obverse legend declares Hadrian’s descent from both Trajan and Nerva, while the reverse legend titles Sabina augusta in addition to its Greek equivalent, sebaste.

Tarsos (AD 198-217) AE 33 - Caracalla403 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE33 (20.54g, 12h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Artemis kneeling to right over deer, raising its head with her left hand, right hand poised to plunge dagger into its throat. Very Fine.

Here we see a more familiar depiction of Artemis than that of the Ephesian manifestation (see lot 867). The reverse type depicts Artemis as the goddess of the hunt, about to slay a deer. Homer applies the epithet 'Ποτνια Θηρων' (Mistress of the Animals) to the goddess, and deer in particular were considered sacred to her. In addition to female fertility and virginity, Artemis was associated with certain male activities - in particular the transition from boyhood to manhood and warfare. Perhaps it is these latter associations Caracalla wished to conjure in Tarsos, the city from which he launched his Parthian campaign in AD 216.

The reverse shows the victors of the "Antonian, Severan and Hadrianic Games" at Tarsos - these were also honorary titles for the city itself. The letters on the reverse field are also honorifics: "First, Biggest and Most Beautiful" "Ruler over the three districts of the province, and holder of two temples of the Imperial cult". Tarsos was especially fond of such titles.
