The types on this issue are fairly common in the regions of southwest Asia Minor, Caria, Phrygia, and Lycia. The combination of these two types on a single issue, however, is unknown. At the same time, only one city, Kibyra in Phrygia, used both of these types on its coinage (cf. SNG von Aulock 3719 and 3720). Attribution to that city, though, is doubtful as all of its known issues bear the city ethnic.

Ashton, in his study, suggests a localization in the vicinity of the Dardanelles and links this issue to the two Rhodian brothers Memnon and Mentor, who served ca 360-330 as satrap and commander of mercenaries in the service of Persian kings.

94000648.jpg
Uncertain (BC 350-300) Drachm - Memnon328 viewsca 360-340 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 3.48g, 6h). Pseudo-Rhodian type. Head of Helios left within solar disk / Rose with bud to each side; M-E flanking. VF, dark find patina. Rare.

While some of these “solar disk” drachms are attributable to Rhodes, most of the issues have long been recognized as being psudo-Rhodian issues from mints in Caria. The ME issues had originally been assigned to Megiste, but R. Ashton convincingly argues against this speculative attribution (cf. R. Ashton, “The Coinage of Nisyros” in Travaux Le Rider, p. 16, n. 4).

This puzzling coin is clearly in the same series as a small group of silver fractions of identical types and style that have trickled onto the market over the past five years with weights averaging 1.12g. Although the types suggest an origin in Asia Minor (e.g. Kyzikos), anecdotal information suggests an area further east in the region of Baktria. The weight is also mysterious - it does not seem to bear any clear relationship to the weight standards prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean, but is almost exactly three times the weight of the silver fractions, suggesting that the coins may have been intended to circulate locally in a closed exchange area rather than as part of the international financial system. The unusual weight on an apparent local standard supports the suggestion that this issue should be attributed to some region in central Asia remote from western commerce.

Varieties of this type have appeared at auction recently, and have been tentatively attributed to Neandria in Troas, where an early fraction featured a helmet on the obverse. While an attribution to a mint in that region is reasonable, Neandria is probably not correct, as its early fractions consistently feature a ram or barley grain on the reverse, which were emblematic of the city. At the same time, the nearby city of Larissa consistently featured an amphora on the reverse of nearly all of its coinage, which would make it a more likely candidate.

In the Gorny sale, the head on the obverse is identified as Athena, but the clearly short hair makes such a determination unlikely. Nevertheless, the style and fabric of this coin suggests a mint in northwest Asia Minor, perhaps Ionia.
