Lampsakos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater (or Tetrobol?) 463 viewsca 500-450 BC. EL Hekte (or AR Tetrobol?) (2.31g, 10mm). Forepart of Pegasos right / Quadripartite incuse square. VF. Carr coll.

Very rare and catalogued as pale electrum giving the appearance of being a silver coin. There is some substantial debate surrounding these issues. While a rare coin, there are examples of both the left and right facing Pegasos types in what is both clearly EL and what appears to be solely silver. Would the ancients accept a coin that did not have a strong yellowish tint as true EL? The original description by J.P. Six as EL is followed by CNG (see CNG 94, lot 459) and Roma (this coin). The weight is consistent with a Hekte.

For the better part of 4th century BC, Lampsakos issued gold staters with forepart of Pegasus with a variety of obverse types. Few Greek cities were issuing gold at this time, and that Lampsakos was able to start such a project and maintain it for five or six decades, speaks volumes of its wealth and importance. Lampsakos had issued an important group of electrum staters in earlier times. Its gold staters apparently enjoyed wide distribution. Baldwin documented 41 issues of Lampsakene staters in her 1924 study, which is still the standard work. Of these, 8 bore figural types and 32 bore portraits, revealing a preference for the latter category. The chief difficulty Baldwin encountered in ordering the series was the surprising lack of die links between issues; in fact only once was a reverse die carried over from one issue to another, making a global die study impossible. For die studies within each issue, she located 5 examples of Hermes staters that were struck with 5 obverse and 4 reverse dies.

Lampsakos (BC 45) AE 16915 viewsTime of Julius Caesar, circa 45 BC. AE16 (4.28g). C G I L head of Janus / Q∙ LVCRET L ∙PONT∙ IIVIR [C]OL∙ DED∙ PR∙, prow. Very rare. Good very fine.

Julius Caesar was the probably the founder of a colony at Lampsacus for veterans; maybe a twin foundation with Parium. The colony seems to have disappeared after its occupation by Sextus Pompey. Types made during this short period are traditional Republican. M. Turius was probably a legate of one of the Caesarian proconsuls of Asia.

ΛAN erroneous for ΛAM, but there are some open questions too: KOI seems to be erroneous for KAI, magistrate AΠOΛΛΩNITOC couldn't be found until now. Priapos was born by Aphrodite in Lampsakos. Therefore Lampsakos was the centre of warshipping of Priapos. Here his depiction was more like Dionysos who was said to be his father.

The cult of Priapus, the god of regeneration and fecundity, was centered on Lampsacus, where he supposedly was born of Aphrodite and Dionysus. This apparently unpublished bronze of Septimius Severus presents the most detailed surviving depiction of the temple of Priapus at Lampsakos.
