This magistrate and bust type is known for some other issues of Severus Alexander from Mytilene, but this reverse type is not known. Additionally, the reading here points toward a possible name of "Posdektos" and "Pardoxos" instead.

Halikarnassos (AD 98-117) AE 23 - Trajan225 viewsTrajan, 98-117 AD. AE23 (7.14g, 6h). AYTO KAI NЄP BAC TPAIANOC ΓЄ ΔA, laureate head of Trajan right / HPOΔOTOC AΛIKAPNACЄΩN, APCЄM/IA, draped bust of Herodotus right. Near VF, brown surfaces. Apparently the second known and the finer of the two. Extremely rare depiction of the historian Herodotus.

Herodotus (ca 485-425 BC) was born to a wealthy family in Halicarnassus, at the time under Persian control, although his family was exiled from the city while Herodotus was quite young and he appears to have only briefly returned to his hometown as an adult. He traveled widely and included accounts of his experiences in his famous The Histories, a description of the Graeco-Persian Wars. Cicero referred to Herodotus as “the father of history” due to his systematic investigation of historical subjects (although others have branded him “father of lies,” as Herodotus seems to have subscribed to the idea of not letting facts get in the way of a good story!).

Antiocheia (BC 150) Tetradrachm356 viewsca 165-145 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 15.78g, 1h). Hermogenes, magistrate. Laureate head of Zeus right / EPMOΓENHΣ - ANTIOXEΩN, eagle, wings closed, standing left on a thunderbolt, being crowned by Nike flying left; all within maeander pattern. Apparently unpublished. Slightly rough, otherwise, gVF.

Aside from extreme rarity, what makes the Zeus-eagle tetradrachms of Antiochia ad Maeandrum especially interesting is that the eagle comes with differing attributes and symbols. The present and apparently unpublished piece shows an eagle that is crowned with a wreath by a small Nike flying behind it. Other types include an eagle with thyrsos (see lot 109 below, also unpublished), eagle with a cornucopiae (SNG von Aulock 2417) and plain eagle (Gorny & Mosch 207 (2012), 358). These varieties all appear to be unique to certain magistrates and therefore may represent yearly issues, but the connections between the symbols and the magistrates are yet to be understood.

Antiocheia (BC 100-0) AE 12114 views1st century BC. AE12 (1.94g, 2h). Stratokles, magistrate. Bee / [ANTI]/O - XE[...]/ΣTPA/TOKΛ, crescent. Apparently unpublished, though cf. SNG Copenhagen 12 and G. Hirsch 284, lot 2445 for a similar reverse convention. Fine, green patina. Extremely rare.

The obverse bee would normally point to Ephesos, but the reverse type would be highly unusual for that city. The ‘O-X’ flanking the crescent must be part of the ethnic, and one of the few cities which would fit these letters is Antioch. The Copenhagen and Hirsch specimens, though having an entirely different obverse type featuring eagle on thunderbolt, have the convention of ethnic in two lines, separated by another astrological symbol (star), with the magistrate’s name in two lines below.

This coin appears to belong to a diverse series of electrum staters struck on the Milesian standard that Kraay (ACGC p. 30), and others, have tentatively attributed to the period of the Ionian Revolt. Although none have ethnics, the obverses of many of the coins are of types common to various cities involved in the revolt. Kraay notes the significant problem with the theory is that none of these coins feature a type attributable to Miletos, the city that led the revolt, but he proposed that it was possible the entire series was struck there as a centralized mint. Thus the types could either represent the cities that contributed resources to the revolt or successive Milesian officials who oversaw the coinage production. If the obverse type does represent the city, this issue would most likely belong to Klazomenai, all of whose contemporary coinage featured a winged-boar forepart.
