Sardeis (AD 23-26) AE 27 - Germanicus and Drusus1060 viewsGermanicus and Drusus, Caesars, ca 23-26 AD. AE27 (12.14g), restruck ca 28-29 AD by Asinius Pollio, Proconsul. Drusus and Germanicus seated left in curule chairs / Legend in wreath; ΓΑΙΩ ΑΣΙΝΝΙΩ ΠΟΛΛΙΩΝΙ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΩ around (overstruck on original legend). VF, green patina, slightly rough surfaces.

This interesting coin appears to be an original issue, but in actuality, it is an earlier issue that is restruck with two intricate 'countermarks.' These 'countermarks' were ring-shaped punch restrikings of the legends that surround the obverse and reverse designs. While the obverse 'countermark-legend' is the same as that which appeared on the original striking, the reverse legend, originally ΕΠΙ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ΚΛΕΩΝΟΣ ΣΑΡΔΙΑΝΟΥ, has been totally replaced by a new 'countermark-legend.'

This piece is distinctive for its elaborate circular shape of its punch without any "obverse" type. At this point in the early development of coinage, it appears that no convention had yet been established that one side or the other was to bear the primary design.

Pedasa (BC 4th cent) AE 121337 viewsca 4th cent BC. AE12 (1.56g, 12h). Head of Athena right wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with palmette / ΠΗΔΑ−ΣΕΩ[Ν], owl standing right, head facing. VF, dark green patina. Extremely rare, apparently the second known coin of this city.

The city of Pedasa near Miletos was not known to have issued coins until von Aulock published a single small bronze coin in 1975. This piece, of the same legend and designs, appears now to be the second known coin of this city. Von Aulock proposed a date during the autonomous interval between 196 BC, when Pedasa was declared a free city, and 175 BC, when Pedasa joined in union with Miletos. However, the fabric, style, and letter forms all point to a more likely date in the early 4th century BC.

All the coins of Ionopolis are extremely rare. This issue with Lucius Verus / Sarapis is known from only 2 battered specimens - Hollstein/Jarman 2 (this coin) and 3 (Frank L. Kovacs Auction 12, 1995) - while the parallel issue, with Marcus Aurelius/Bust of Isis, is known from only one coin - Hollstein/Jarman 1 - in Berlin. The coins were probably struck to celebrate the renaming of Abonuteichos as Ionopolis circa 162 AD.

Apollonis (AD 139-161) AE 29 - Marcus Aurelius1004 viewsMarcus Aurelius (as Caesar?), 139-161 AD. AE29 (17.20g), Aeschrion and Hermokrates, magistrates. Unpublished in the major references.

The magistrate Hermokrates is known for Apollonis through several coins of Lucius Verus. The portrait and titles suggest a date late in Aurelius' service as Caesar or immediately after he succeeded Antoninus Pius in 161 AD. The second magistrate, Aeschrion, is known from one other coin, also of Lucius Verus, from Apollonia, which has been identified as Apollonia Salbace in Caria, Mionnet III pg. 332, 173). It is tempting to see them as the same person. But Apollonis in Lydia and Apollonia Salbace are some distance apart, and it is difficult to see the connection. However, there are a number of other Apollonias in Asia Minor, and one of them, Apollonia on the Caicus in Mysia, is only some 20 miles from Apollonis. Perhaps the two close neighbors shared more than a similarity in names, and there was a civic connection.

(BC 133-130) Eumenes III - Cistophoric Tetradrachm1693 viewsEumenes III (Aristonikos), pretender to the throne of Pergamon, 133-130 BC. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (12.47g), struck in Lydia, Thyateia, dated year 2 (of his revolt=132/1 BC). Cista mystica with serpent; all within ivy wreath / Bow-case with serpents; thunderbolt above, [Θ]ΥΑ, to left; male head (Dionysos?) to right; within coils of serpents, BA-EY and B (date). VF, toned, reverse slightly double-struck. Very rare.

When the Pergamene king Attalos II died in 134 BC, he bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans. Because the Romans were slow in securing their claim, Aristonikos, son of the earlier Pergamene king Eumenes II, filled the power vacuum, claiming the throne and taking the dynastic name Eumenes. Although unable to capture Pergamon, his revolt lasted four years, until he was defeated and captured by the Romans under the consul M. Perperna. After his surrender, he was paraded through Rome and executed.

All the coins of this city are very rare, and this reverse type seems to be unrecorded for Neoklaudiopolis. Also interesting is the (unexplained?) legend-ending KOM KECAP, which can also be found on coins of Tavion in Galatia.
