(BC 470-440) Uncertain Dynast - 1/8 Stater?865 viewsca 480-450 BC. AR 1/8 Stater? (1.17g). Boar's head left / Protome of a man-headed bull facing left within incuse square. EF.

The reverse image is reminiscent of the coins of the Lycian dynast Uvug. The weight standard is hard to define, since the weights are somewhat erratic (along with the von Aulock coin, cf. Peus 372, 2002, lot 361). It might be a 1/6th stater on the light stater (c. 8.0-8.6 g), but actually this standard is known from 460 BC onwards only; cf. O. Morkholm and G. Neumann, Die lykischen Munzlegenden (Gottingen 1978), p. 5 f.

(BC 480) Amartite - Stater1119 viewsAmartite, Dynast, ca 480 BC. AR Stater (10.63g, 3h). Crab / "AMIARTITA" in Lycian, crab; all within incuse square. Good VF, toned, die break in obverse field. Extremely rare, the second known. Falghera noted that this issue belongs to a group that bridges the anepigraphic and epigraphic period, which would place it circa 480 BC. Additionally, the name "EME" on Falghera 57, which shares the same obverse die as both Amartite coins, may actually be a contracted form of the name of this same dynast.

(BC 500-300) Lead weight - hemihekte643 viewsca 500 BC. Hemihekte lead weight (1.31g, 13.3x8.6mm). Head of Silenos facing / Incuse scallop shell. gVF. Carr coll.

This lead piece appears to be a coin weight for an electrum hemihekte of Phocaic standard. The facing head of Silenos types are commonly found on coins from Sicily, Macedonia, Lesbos, Mysia and Ionia. The scallop shell, while a common type for Italy and Sicily, was used as a control symbol across the Greek world. The weight is appropriate for an electrum hemihekte of standard and type struck in Asia Minor. This appears to be the first recorded specimen, but is consistent with those anticipated by Lang and Crosby, “The Athenian Agora - Volume X: Weights, Measures and Tokens” (1964).

(BC 520-480) Uncertain Dynast - 1/2 Stater?892 viewsca 521-478 BC. AR Drachm (4.12g, 14mm). Forepart of winged bull right / Quadripartite incuse square divided diagonally. Good VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare. Ex Leu 65 (5/1996), lot 202.

Leu sale attributed this issue to an uncertain mint in Ionia, noting the similarity of the style to the archaic issues of Klazomenai that feature a winged boar forepart. It is also similar in style to various winged boar foreparts on contemporary issues at Mytilene. While agreeing with these comparisons, the weight of this example and its diagonally divided incuse are more consistent with issues of Lesbos than Ionia. The bull is also a common type used at Mytilene, but relatively rare among issues in Ionia. Finally, in addition to using winged boars, Mytilene used winged lions, so the appearance of a winged bull would not be surprising (especially as all motifs are common in eastern/Persian art). So, while the attribution to Mytilene is conjectural, the preponderance of the evidence weighs greater in its favor than than to a mint in Ionia.

Abydos (BC 520-490) EL 1/3 Stater4630 viewsca 500 BC. EL Trite - 1/3 Stater (4.66g). Eagle standing left, with closed wings, looking backwards / Rough incuse punch.
Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second specimen known. Struck on a narrow flan, otherwise aEF.

Attributing uninscribed electrum coins of this period without assured badges is extremely difficult, as is with this trite. Abydos is an obvious possibility since the eagle was a common feature of its coinage. For other common coins see an electrum stater in the British Museum catalogue of Ionia (pl. I, no. 23) (eagle of similar proportions and identical pose, perched upon what is described as a hare). See also some early silver fractions attributed to Abydos with incuse punch reverses (SNG Cop. 1-2; SNG Klein 292), though they show a bird of a different character, without its head reverted.

Aspendos (BC 480) Obol276 viewsEarly-mid 5th century BC. AR Diobol or Eighth Stater(?) (10mm, 1.24g). Two wrestlers grappling; globule between / Incuse square punch. VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare.

Although this obverse type is featured prominently on the staters of Aspendos and Selge, this fraction does seem not fit into the scheme of either city’s coinage. This type was not used on their coins until late in the 5th century, certainly too late for this issue. Also, the weight of the two known pieces, at 1.04 and 1.24 grams, does not seem to comport with the weights of the other denominations at each city during the early-mid 5th century.
