Apollonis (AD 139-161) AE 29 - Marcus Aurelius153 viewsMarcus Aurelius (as Caesar?), 139-161 AD. AE29 (17.20g), Aeschrion and Hermokrates, magistrates. AV KAI M AVPHΛIOC ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟC, bare-headed and draped bust right / ΑΠΟΛΩΝΙΔΕΩΝ across field, ΑΠ ΕPΜΟΚPΑΤΟC ΑΙCXPΙΩΝΟC, Zeus standing left, holding eagle and sceptre. Good VF, dark brown patina. Unpublished in the major references.

The magistrate Hermokrates is known for Apollonis through several coins of Lucius Verus. The portrait and titles suggest a date late in Aurelius' service as Caesar or immediately after he succeeded Antoninus Pius in 161 AD. The second magistrate, Aeschrion, is known from one other coin, also of Lucius Verus, from Apollonia, which has been identified as Apollonia Salbace in Caria, Mionnet III pg. 332, 173). It is tempting to see them as the same person. But Apollonis in Lydia and Apollonia Salbace are some distance apart, and it is difficult to see the connection. However, there are a number of other Apollonias in Asia Minor, and one of them, Apollonia on the Caicus in Mysia, is only some 20 miles from Apollonis. Perhaps the two close neighbors shared more than a similarity in names, and there was a civic connection.

Lampsakos (BC 356) AV Stater - Artabazos272 viewsArtabazos, Satrap of Daskylion, ca 356 BC. AV Stater (8.46g, 3h). Head of Artabazos left, wearing a Persian tiara tied with a diadem / Forepart of Pegasos right in shallow incuse. Good VF, a few light scratches. Extremely rare, only six examples recorded, four of which are in museum collections.

Traditionally, this stater has been assigned to the satrap Orontes, based on the similarity of its reverse to silver and bronze coins believed to have been struck by him at Lampsakos. Although Orontes did control portions of Mysia, he was in fact subordinate to his kinsman Artabazos who was the true satrap of the entire region of Daskylion, which encompassed Lampsakos at the time this coin was struck. When both Orontes and Artabazos rebelled against the Persian king Artaxerxes III in 357 BC, Artabazos secured Lampsakos through the agency of the hired Athenian mercenary, Chares. When Chares accomplished his mission, Artabazos richly rewarded him in coin, the likely occasion for striking this issue.

Priapos (BC 350-300) AE 1915 viewsca 4th century BC. AE19 (5.17g). Laureate head of Apollo right / Π-Ρ/Ι-Α, lighted altar, crayfish below. VF, dark green patina. Apparently unpublished.

The reverse type is unkown at Priapos, however, it closely resembles the great altar of Parium present on the reverse of coins that city (cf., e.g., BMC Mysia pg. 97, 40). Thus, it is possible that this coin commemorates an alliance between the two cities.
