Dionysios was the unelected overlord of Heraclea Pontica and its surrounds - a tyrant. He managed to keep his domain relatively independent within the Persian Empire. The Macedonian invasion of Asia Minor in 333 BC did not disturb the area and Dionysus remained, even whilst Antigonus Mono. monitored Alexander's lines of communications. After 323 BC, as Ariarathes I of Cappadocia struck North into Sinope and much of the surrounds, still Dionysus prevailed even whilst Perdiccas and Eumenes restored order. He married Amastris the niece of the deceased King Darius III (divorced from Craterus having been wedded at Susa in 324 BC by Alexander) and she bore him 3 sons. He died in 305 BC and she ruled on with her sons. Soon Lysimachos was making advances and they married in 302 BC. VF.

NERO CLAVD DIV[I CLAVD F CAESAR AVG] GERMANI, laureate head of Nero right, countermark in right field / AGRIPPIN[A AVGVSTA] MATER AVGVSTI, draped bust of Agrippina II right, stacked KK behind head. Very rare: RPC lists only fifteen Caesarean drachms of Nero and Agrippina of all varieties, and only one, in BM, of this exact variety, with letters K K and Agrippina's unveiled head right on reverse. The K K probably stands for "Koinon of Cappadocia". The oddly shaped countermark on obverse, showing two objects resembling a minnow and a flounder, is apparently unpublished, since not mentioned in RPC or Howgego's book on countermarks. Fine+/VF.

Pergamon (AD 198-217) AE 43 - Caracalla1204 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE43 - Medallion (43.91g). M. Caerelius Attalos, magistrate. AVT KPAT K MAPKOC AVP ANTWNEINOC, laureate and cuirassed (with gorgoneion) bust right / ΕΠΙ CΤΡ Μ ΚΑΙΡΕΛ ΑΤΤΑΛΟΥ ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΩΝ Γ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ, adventus of the emperor into Pergamum: Caracalla on horseback right, receiving acclamation, soldier walking behind, statue of Asclepius on garlanded column before. VF, dark green patina with red highlights, fields smoothed.

In the fall of 214 AD, Caracalla visited the shrine of Asclepius at Pergamum to seek the god's help in curing his various diseases that he had succumbed to while in Germany (probably physiological more so than psychological). Caracalla must have received some respite from his illnesses as he then ordered the reconstruction of the temple of Asclepius as well as the temples of Roma, the deified Augustus, Zeus Philus and the deified Trajan. Of course, these acts would have endeared Caracalla to the Pergamenes who then struck a special series of medallions commemorating this historic visit.

Tarsos (BC 425-400) Stater1197 viewsca 425-400 BC. AR Stater (10.35g). Bellerophon riding Pegasos left, spearing Chimera below / The God Nergal, standing left and holding axe, ear of corn to left, small tree to right, 'NRGL-TRZ' = Nergal? Tarsos in Aramaic characters above. Extremely rare and interesting. Attractive dark tone, EF. Ex NAC Sale 10 (1997), lot 253.

Nergal was a fearsome Mesopotamian god associated with death; he reigned in the underworld and was the protector of men against pestilence and war. His name survives not only on coinage, but on Akkadian and Elamite inscriptions, and seemingly also in the names of high-ranking Assyrian officials and a Babylonian king of the early 7th cent. BC, Nergal-ushezib. The small tree may be the "sacred tree" that is often the focal point of ceremonies depicted on Neo-Assyrian reliefs and seals.

Unpublished. Good very fine.

Athena was the usual type of Priene's civic coinage, advertising the city's temple of Athena Polias, dedicated by Alexander the Great. The specific types of this drachm - a frontal bust of Athena, paired with a Nike reverse - are new to Priene's silver coinage. The magistrate who signed this issue has a prominent name at Priene: at least two men named Athenopolis are mentioned in inscriptions found at the city, one a victorious wrestler, the other a priest of Dionysos.

Kibyra (AD 54-68) AE 19 - Marcellus1184 viewsTime of Nero, 54-68 AD. AE19 (4.66g, 6h). Marcellus, legate(?). MAP KEΛΛOC, bare head of Marcellus right / KIBY PATΩN, eagle standing left on altar, head right. VF, black-green patina with traces of olive encrustation. Very rare. Ex Villemur Coll.; ex Malter XXXIV (12/1986), lot 371; ex Knobloch Coll. (Stack's, 6/1970), lot 376.

Other than that his name was Marceullus, the identity of and office held by the individual depicted on this issue is uncertain. Certainly he held office worthy of this coinage, but during this period, no Marcellus is known to have served as a proconsul in Asia, nor is there any other reference to such an individual having served in any other important capacity. The only possibility that seems plausible is that he was a legate dispatched to attend to some important duty in Asia in the mid-1st century AD.

Alabanda was situated in northern Caria on the river Marsyas, about 30 km from its confluence with the Maeander. The first coins known for the city are the issues struck in the name of Antiocheia in honour of Antiochus III of Syria, during his attempt to recover Asia Minor in the early 2nd century (cf. Houghton, SC p. 352). After his defeat at the battle of Magnesia in 190 BC, Alabanda reverted to its old name and issued tetradrachms with magistrate names as well as Alexander-type tetradrachms, but it was not until about 167 that the bulk of the 'dated' A-B coins were issued (cf. SNG Helsinki 1-5). For an in-depth analysis into this coinage, see N. Waggoner, 'A new wrinkle in the Hellenistic coinage of Antioch/Alabanda' in Kraay-Morkholm Essays, 1989, pp. 284-290.
