Diademed head of Seleukos I right / ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, holding shield and spear, ivy leaf before, bow behind, A on throne. When Lysimachos established the mint of Pergamon, he entrusted its treasury to the eunuch Philetairos. In the latter 280s BC, Philetairos changed his allegiance to Seleukos I. Shortly thereafter in 281 BC, Lysimachos was defeated by Seleukos at the Battle of Korupedion. Although Seleukos was assassinated the following year, Philetairos continued to acknowledge Seleukid primacy. This coinage, commemorating Seleukos I, was struck while Pergamon was still loyal to the Seleukids, under their king Antiochos I. Houghton & Lorber (SC), citing Le Rider and Newell, assign this coinage to the aftermath of Antiochos' victory over the Galatians, circa 269/8 BC.

Samos (BC 404-394) Tridrachm3888 viewsca 404 or 394 BC. AR Tridrachm or Double Siglos (11.29g, 12h). The infant Herakles, nude but for a baldric over his left shoulder, kneeling to right on ground line, strangling a serpent with each hand, ΣΥΝ / Lion's mask facing, ΣΑ below; all within circular incuse. Extremely rare. Toned EF. From the collections of C. Gillet, 1138, R. Jameson, and the Reverend H.V. Elliott, SWH 2/1908, purchased in Asia Minor 1818-1819.

This rare coin was struck to celebrate an alliance (syn = synmachikon = a coin of allies) between cities in western Asia Minor (Byzantion, Ephesos, Iasos, Knidos, Kyzikos, Lampsakos, Rhodes and Samos), which all used the common type of infant Herakles/snakes on obv with rev bearing normal city badge. It was thought that this alliance came about in 394 after the defeat of the Spartan fleet, but Karweise, Lysander as Herakliskos Drakonopnigon ('Herakles the snake-strangler'), NC 1980, has made a good case for it having taken place 10 years earlier, when the cities threw off Athenian domination with the help of the Spartan Lysander. In many ways this seems a better choice, but hoard evidence is inconclusive.

Herakleia Pontika (BC 337-305) Didrachm - Dionysios1223 viewsca 337-305 BC, time of Tyrant Dionysios. AR Didrachm (9.64g). Head of Dionysos left, wreathed in ivy / Naked Herakles left, with lion skin and club, erecting trophy of arms. aVF. Rare.

Dionysios was the unelected overlord of Heraclea Pontica and its surrounds - a tyrant. He managed to keep his domain relatively independent within the Persian Empire. The Macedonian invasion of Asia Minor in 333 BC did not disturb the area and Dionysus remained, even whilst Antigonus Mono. monitored Alexander's lines of communications. After 323 BC, as Ariarathes I of Cappadocia struck North into Sinope and much of the surrounds, still Dionysus prevailed even whilst Perdiccas and Eumenes restored order. He married Amastris the niece of the deceased King Darius III (divorced from Craterus having been wedded at Susa in 324 BC by Alexander) and she bore him 3 sons. He died in 305 BC and she ruled on with her sons. Soon Lysimachos was making advances and they married in 302 BC. VF.
