Arykanda (AD 238-244) AE 32 - Gordian III738 viewsGordian III, 238-244 AD. AE32 (17.45g). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Radiate deity wearing Phrygian cap riding right, brandishing club. VF, dark green patina. Rare city.

Arycanda only struck coins during the reign of Gordian III, both in his name and in that of his wife, Tranquillina. Of special interest is the fact that this coin shares its obverse die with coins issued for the city of Acalissus.

Ex Busso Peus Auk. 360 (4/1999), lot 35; CNG Auc. 42 (5/1997), lot 524. (BC 480) Amartite - Stater1121 viewsAmartite, Dynast, ca 480 BC. AR Stater (10.63g, 3h). Crab / "AMIARTITA" in Lycian, crab; all within incuse square. Good VF, toned, die break in obverse field. Extremely rare, the second known. Falghera noted that this issue belongs to a group that bridges the anepigraphic and epigraphic period, which would place it circa 480 BC. Additionally, the name "EME" on Falghera 57, which shares the same obverse die as both Amartite coins, may actually be a contracted form of the name of this same dynast.22222

Xanthos (BC 360) Diobol - Maussollos?770 viewsafter 360 BC. AR Diobol (1.60g). Head of lion right / 8-rayed star; Lycian letters 'ARN' (Arnna = Xanthos) between. VF. Unique?

The lion/star motif is usually representative of the Carian Hekatomnid Dynasty. However, the Lycian letters identifying Xanthos is a mystery. The coin may have been struck following the fall of Perikle in the failed Revolt of the Satraps (361 BC), when Lycia lost its independence and Maussolos may have inherited jurisdiction over it.

Lykia Uncertain (BC 380-370) Obol600 viewsca 380-370 BC. AR Obol (0.56g). Murex shell / Sea serpent (ketos?). VF, attractively toned, small piece broken off and professionally repaired.

While the similarities to the type of Mithrapata suggest an attribution to that dynast, all of his coins bear at least a portion of his name and there are no letters on this coin. As types tend to be transferred from dynast to dynast, it is possible that this issue is from a contemporary of Mithrapata. The sea serpent, though, is not present on any published specimen of a Lycian dynast, which suggests that this coin may not be from the dynasts' series at all.

Oinoanda (BC 200) Didrachm - Series 3746 viewsca 200 BC. AR Didrachm (20mm, 7.58g, 12h). Laureate head of Zeus right; B (erased in die) and scepter behind / Eagle standing right on thunderbolt; Γ to left; to right, sword behind shield. EF, dark find patina. Rare. Winokur Coll.

This short series of coinage from Oinoanda was apparently struck in three series, each marked with A, B, or Γ. Originally these letters were thought to represent dates on a local era, but Ashton’s study shows this is far from conclusive, regardless that they were struck sequentially. The obverse die used for this coin was originally used for series 2 didrachms, which have a B on the obverse.
