Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #11258

Mytilene (BC 412-378) EL Hekte - B74

ca 412-378 BC. EL Hekte (2.51g, 4h, 9mm). Head of Artemis-Kybele right, wearing stephane decorated with palmettes/ Head of an African right, wearing stephane, within linear square, in incuse square. Good VF/nVF. Carr coll.

In describing this type, some have suggested that the reverse is a caricature mask of Daktylen, or Telchin, as miner with leather apron (in front of the forehead or a leather cap). Idaic Dactyles were daemonic beings believed to be the first to discover and use metal. Allegedly they were from the Ida Mountains in Phrygia. It has been suggested that there is a correlation to the mythology of Central and Western Europe where dwarfs were also associated with mining and are to be noted in fairy tales such as that of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Fourteen examples are recorded in Bodenstedt and a further twenty examples have appeared in auction.
