Persian Kings (BC 420-375) Daric

Xerxes I to Artaxerxes II, ca 420-375 BC. AV Daric (12.5mm, 8.31g). Lydo-Milesian standard, Sardeis mint. Persian king wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling running stance right, holding spear in right hand and bow in left / Incuse punch. Good VF, well centered and unusually well struck. Carr coll.

In reference to another example of a Daric “Coin ID #14981" a call was made to more adequately capture the dimensions of these series. It was noted that the convention for CNG is to provide a single measurement from 9 to 3. To capture a better feel for the size of this coin the following dimensions are provided: maximum width, 12.72mm; maximum length, 19.93mm; and maximum profile, or depth, 3.79mm. The maximum length of this coin appears extraordinary, but whether that is something of significance for this period/type can only be gauged if we have comparable dimensions recorded for other coins in this series.
