Sinope (BC 333-322) Drachm - Ariarathes I

Ariarathes, Satrap, ca 328-325 BC. AR Drachm (4.57g). Head of nymph left, hair in sakkos; Aramaic letters behind / Eagle on dolphin left; Aramaic inscription below. Good VF, porous. Rare.

During the wars of Alexander III, Ariarathes I, the first king of Cappadocia, seized Sinope, and struck this rare series which maintained the standard Sinope types, but replaced the Greek legends with Aramaic inscriptions.
