Magnesia (AD 235-238) AE 29 - Maximinus I Thrax

Maximinus I Thrax, 235-238 AD. AE (15.30g). AVT KAI Γ ΙΟVΛ ΟVΗ MAΞIMEINOC, laureate, draped bust right / ΕΠΙ ΓΡΑΜΜ - AVP - AKTIA-KOV, (in exergue) MAΓΝΗΤΩΝ, Hephaestus sitting in short tunic, pilus on head, hammering a helmet; standing on a short column before him, Athena standing left, with shield and lance. Very rare. Smoothed, VF.

Schultz lists only one copy in Berlin. This type is important in showing production of defense articles of metal in Magnesia, with a major guild of blacksmiths in town. See J. Nollé, Athena in the forge of Hephaestus, JNG 45, 1995, 51-77.
