Samos (BC 360-340) Tetradrachm

ca 360-340 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.12g). Lion’s mask facing / ΣA, Athena standing to right, brandishing spear and holding shield decorated with a gorgoneion; owl standing to left, olive- branch above; within an incuse square. gVF. Unique. Prospero coll.

It has been suggested by Hurter that these Athenian types might coincide with the dominance of a pro-Athenian faction at Samos shortly before Athens began to lay siege to the island in 366 BC.
