Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #1557

Rhodes (BC 88) AE 28

ca 88 BC, Siege of Mithradates VI. AE28 (14.61g, 12h). Radiate head of Helios right / P-O, rose; helmet to left, thunderbolt to right. VF, dark brown patina. Good strike on a broad flan, much superior most published specimens in the series.

Struck during Mithradates VI's failed 6-month siege of Rhodes in 88 BC. Unable to produce enough silver for military expenditures, the Rhodians resorted to a fiduciary bronze coinage. (See R. Ashton, Rhodian Bronze Coinage and the Siege of Mithradates VI, in NumChron 2001.)
