Side (AD 198-217) AE 34 - Caracalla
|
Caracalla, 198-217 AD. AE34 / 4 Assaria (22.54g, 7h). Circa 215/6-217 AD. AY K C M AY CEOYHPOC ANTΩNEINOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of a bearded Caracalla to right / CΙΔ - Η – ΤΩÎ, on the left, a laureate, bearded and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, supported on a low column; at the center, legionary standard; on the right, the Tyche of Side standing left, turreted, holding cornucopiae in her left hand and raising her right hand in salute. Brown patina. Somewhat rough surfaces and minor flan cracks, otherwise, very fine.
The scene on the reverse must refer to sacrifices made in honor of Caracalla's forthcoming or current campaigns against the Parthians. The emperor's solely military attire on the reverse, as well as the legionary standard make this quite clear.
