Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #5888

Side (AD 98-117) AE 17 - Trajan

Trajan, 98-117 AD. AE17 (4.53g). [..TPAI]ANOC - [...], draped, laureate bust right / CIΔH - TΩN, Nike/Athena, in long clothes, flying left on snake erecting before her, round shield on left shoulder and spear behind right shoulder; holding pomegranate in her outstretched right hand. Very rare, about VF. Hoeft coll.

Pat Lawrence has pointed out that the reverse cites the Nike which is held by Athena Sidetes in her outstretched hand on the tetradrachms of Antiochos VII Euergetes Sidetes who came from Side. The pomegranate was the symbol of Side (which means old-anatolian = pomegranate!), the snake obviously an allusion to Erychthonios.
