Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #4586

Attaleia (AD 96-98) AE 19 - Nerva

Nerva, 96-98 AD. AE19 (6.26g). Laureate head right / Helmeted and draped bust of Athena right, wearing aegis. VF, dark green patina. Wagner Coll. The Roman coinage of Attaleia is difficult to assign to specific reigns because the coins do not carry identifying inscriptions until the reign of Trajan. Baydur assigns this coin to Trajan based on an “unreadable legend” on the known example. This better quality specimen shows there is in fact no obverse legend. This coin probably should be assigned to the reign of Nerva.
