Commodus, 177-192 AD. AE43 - Medallion (40.53g, 6h). Marcus Aurelius Athenaios, magistrate. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right; countermarks: head right (Caracalla?) within circular incuse (2x) / Asclepius standing facing on left, leaning on serpent-entwined staff; to right, Apollo Tyrimnaios standing left, holding laurel branch. Fine, dark green and brown patina. Very rare. Frederick Coll.; Ex Drewry Coll. (CNG Elec. Auc. 119, lot 81); Mabbott Coll. (Schulman, 6/1969), lot 1851.
