Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #12959

Mytilene (BC 530-522) EL 1/24 Stater - BE-

ca 530-522 BC. EL 1/24 Stater (0.58g, 6mm). Calf head facing right / Incuse square. VF, toned. Carr coll.

Unknown to Bodenstedt, this appears to be the fifth example that has been offered at auction. This example shares the same die and punch as two other examples – CNG Auc. 88 (9/2011), lot 363 (Coin ID #8310); and CNG Auc. 97 (9/2014) lot 223. After Bodenstedt was published in 1981, some scholars have suggested this series of emissions appears to equate to a Lydo-Milesian standard, which may indicate it was minted in Ionia, perhaps during the Ionian Revolt - see Kayhan (2002), Plate 28 nos. 732-734 (also Coin ID #12749).
