Coin ID #1447

Anazarbos (AD 222-235) Hexassarion - Severus Alexander

Severus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE Hexassarion (19.10g), 230/231 AD. ΑΥΤΟ Κ Μ Α CΕΟΥ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟC, cuirassed and laureate bust right / Six-bow building with double-columns and numorous roofs; in exergue, ΑΝΑZΡΒΟΥ. Very rare, detailed architectural depiction, dark-green patina, good very fine.

Zeigler describes this building to be related to the city's water-supply; on a parelel issue a water-god is depicted. It probably depicts a monumental Numphaeum, which forms the entrance to the Agora or Gymnasium behind, from which one can see the roofs.
