Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #2429

Ionopolis (AD 161-169) AE 26 - Lucius Verus

Lucius Verus, 161-169 AD. AE26 (14.25g, 6h). Laureate bust of Verus right / ΙΩΝΟΠΟΛΕ-ΙΤΩΝ, bust of Sarapis with kalathos right.

All the coins of Ionopolis are extremely rare. This issue with Lucius Verus / Sarapis is known from only 2 battered specimens - Hollstein/Jarman 2 (this coin) and 3 (Frank L. Kovacs Auction 12, 1995) - while the parallel issue, with Marcus Aurelius/Bust of Isis, is known from only one coin - Hollstein/Jarman 1 - in Berlin. The coins were probably struck to celebrate the renaming of Abonuteichos as Ionopolis circa 162 AD.
