Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #2830

Ephesos (AD 79-91) Cistophoric Tetradrachm - Julia Titi

Julia Titi, daughter of Titus. Augusta, 79-91 AD. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (11.04g, 6h). Struck under Domitian, ca 81-82 AD. Draped bust right / Vesta seated left, holding palladium and sceptre. VF, toned, atttractive. Very rare. Ex CNG 58 (9/2001), lot 1151. While no decisive evidence exists for the location of the mint of the cistophori during the reigns of Vespasian through Trajan, the style, legends, and, in particular, the consistent die axis point to Rome, suggesting that these coins were minted in the capital and then sent to Asia for local use.
