Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #4161

Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) Lion 1 - EL 1/6

ca 600 BC. EL Hekte - 1/6 Stater (2.42g). Milesian standard. Figural type. Head of roaring lion right on striated background / Double incuse square punches. Unpublished. Good VF. Apparently unique.

A few very rare issues of electrum have a lion forepart on a horizontally-striated field (cf. CNG 69, lots 444 and 447), but this is apparently the first appearance of lion’s head on a vertically-striated field.
