Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #7952

Antiocheia (AD 130-270) AE31 – Antiochos I

2nd-3rd cent AD. AE31 (18.33g, 6h). Diademed and draped bust of Antiochos I right / Eagle flying left, head right, above garlanded altar. VF, dark green patina, minor marks. Rare.

Most of the Imperial coinage from this city bears the heads of Boule, the Senate or Gerousia. This remarkable, rare piece bears an idealized head of the city’s founder, Antiochos I, and is one of the few instances where an Imperial coin bears the head of a Hellenistic ruler.
