There is also a coin of Faustina II from Maeonia (SNG Righetti 1040) with a different portrait style and hair-style. Because the portrait on this coin resembles the portrait of Faustina Senior as encountered on imperial coinage and because Münsterberg mentions a magistrate Moukianos in the time of Antoninus Pius, I am attributing this coin to the elder Faustina.

Maionia (AD 161-180) AE 17431 viewsTime of Marcus Aurelius, 161-180 AD. AE17 (4.33g, 12h). Bare head of Hercules left / Omphale advancing right, wearing lion’s skin, holding club over shoulder. VF, dark green and brown patina.

In expiation for his murder of Iphitus at Tiryns, Hercules was compelled by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Cercopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool while, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), Omphale wore Hercules’ lion’s skin and carried his club. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year’s service was completed, Hercules married Omphale.

Maionia (AD 161-180) AE 35 - Marcus Aurelius438 viewsMarcus Aurelius, 161-180 AD. AE35 (24.70g), struck under archon Quintus. AVT KAIC - ANTΩNEINOC AVP, laureate bust right / EΠI KVEINTOV B APX A MAIONIΩN, Hades with blowing clothes in galloping quadriga right, head left, holding scepter and reins, clasping struggling Persephone waving arms in distress; her flower basket below horses, flying Eros above. Rare, about VF, two flan cracks. Hoeft coll.; ex Burnstein coll.

Hades fell in love with Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, and asked Zeus for permission to marry her. Zeus feared to offend his eldest brother by a downright refusal, but knew also that Demeter would not forgive him if Persephone were committed to the underworld. Zeus "therefore answered politically that he could neither give nor withhold his consent." This emboldened Hades to abduct Persephone, as she was picking flowers in a meadow, and carry her away in his horse-drawn chariot to the underworld.

The theme of the Dionysiac procession represents the struggle of the young god, son of Zeus and Semele, to gain his place among the gods of the Greek pantheon. In literature his progression, accompanied by satyrs and maenads, is hailed from Greece to the shores of India, i.e. the entire known world, as he brings ectasy and the knowledge of wine to all peoples.
