Akmoneia (AD 251-253) AE 30 - Trebonianus Gallus504 viewsTrebonianus Gallus, 251-253 AD. AE30 (12.08g, 6h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Nymph advancing right, with billowing veil, holding the infant Zeus; three Kuretes around, each in armor and holding sword and shield. VF, green patina, a bit rough. Rare.
The Kuretes share some of the attributes of the Korybantes, dancing divinities associated with the worship of Kybele, but their specific role in Greek mythology was to serve as the protectors of the infant Zeus while he was hidden away on Crete, safe from his jealous father Kronos. Their militant dancing, accompanied by the clashing of swords on shields, drowned out the cries of the infant. The nursing of Zeus, according to certain traditions, was left to the sister nymphs Adrasteia and Ida, who fed Zeus with the the milk of the she-goat Amaltheia (in other traditions Amaltheia is a third nymph).

Akmoneia (AD 253-268) AE 27405 viewsTime of Gallienus, 253-268 AD. AE27 (19.34g, 7h). Diademed bust of Demos right / Herakles standing right, leaning on club, holding apples behind back. VF, brown patina, rough surfaces. Ex Righetti Coll., 6146.
The model for this reverse type is a Hellenistic sculpture copied by the Romans - the most famous copy being Glykon’s ‘Farnese Hercules’ that was discovered in the excavations of the Baths of Caracalla in 1546. The statue depicts the hero at rest after completing his Labors: he is shown standing with his club propped under his left arm, supporting the weight of his muscular frame, his head slightly nodding forward in a weary attitude, and he holds the apples of the Hesperides behind his back in his right hand.
