Kyzikos (BC 390-340) Drachm?540 viewsca 3rd century BC. AR Drachm(?) (5.07g, 20mm). Head of Kore Soteira left, with hair in sphendone; ΣΩTEIPA / Head of lion left; monogram to left; below, tunny left; KYZI.
The weight of this piece is significantly heavier than SNG BN 408-10, which are closer to 3.25g. Additionally, the obverse style is much closer to the following series featuring the seated Apollo reverse type. BN 419 fits the obverse style and weight, but is of the later reverse type, pointing to a possible hybrid or transitional issue. Very rare and interesting. Very fine, some porosity.Nov 29, 2019

Kyzikos (BC 550-510) Hemiobol269 viewsca 550 BC. AR Hemiobol (0.46g, 7mm). Head of lion right, holding tunny in mouth / Irregular incuse punch.
Most probably Kyzikos - the image reminds of the early obols of Kyzikos which depict a tunny with fish in its mouth. The lion is not unknown on later coins from Kyzikos and is mostly combined with a tunny - but no other piece shows a lion holding a fish in its mouth. The drawing of the lion differs very much from these later illustrations. It may be suggested that this coin can be dated at the beginning of the coinage of Kyzikos.Oct 09, 2016

Near EF, old collection tone, slightly off center, some marks on the reverse. Extremely rare, only BM example known for this symmachy issue at Kyzikos. MPM coll., acquired in 1928.
The British Museum acquired the only known example of this type from a dealer in Rhodes in 1927 (cf. N. Hardwick in QT XXV [1996]), as part of a group of four coins that had been found together. As the present coin was acquired by the consignor’s grandfather in 1928, it is possible that it was part of the same find that contained the BM coin. A comparison of color photographs of the two coins reveals a similar surface appearance that is consistent with coins from a common hoard.Jan 22, 2016

Homonoia between cities proclaimed their commonality of interests, like that of "sister-cities" in the modern world, and was based on political, economic and religious connections. The cities of Asia Minor preserved this tradition under the Roman Empire, with an extensive interlinked system of such commonalities. Among the cities participating in homonoia, Ephesus seems to have been the most popular, undoubtedly due to its status as the principal cult center of Artemis. Cyzicus, an economic powerhouse due to its location on the southern shore of the Propontis, dominated the trade routes between the Black Sea and the Aegean since the Classical period. Thus, a reciprocal alliance between the major regional trader and the cult site would benefit each other immensely.Jun 14, 2014

The portrait on this particular issue is thought to be Attis, the consort of Phrygian Kybele. The androgynous Kybele/Agdistis was castrated by the gods. From the severed parts grew an almond tree from which Attis sprang. Attis appears infrequently in Greek art, but he was raised in status when the Romans adopted the cult of Kybele. Oct 03, 2013
