This short series of coinage from Oinoanda was apparently struck in three series, each marked with A, B, or Γ. Originally these letters were thought to represent dates on a local era, but Ashton’s study shows this is far from conclusive, regardless that they were struck sequentially. The obverse die used for this coin was originally used for series 2 didrachms, which have a B on the obverse.Jan 17, 2007

In Treasures of Ancient Coinage: From the Private Collections of ANS Members, Catharine Lorber catalogued a coin of Maximinus I Thrax from Anchialus in Thrace with a very similar reverse type (see p. 121, no. 110). Lorber summarized the type as "...a symbolic map of the cosmos. Zeus, chief of the gods, is the central figure... Surrounding this scene is a broad band containing the twelve signs of the zodiac. The entire design reflects the common belief of 3rd century Romans that their lives were shaped by higher powers. This schema and variations on it were employed by numerous mints for different emperors from the mid-2nd through the mid-3rd centuries."Jan 09, 2007

Gergis (BC 480-450) Hemidrachm2221 viewsca 480-450 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.07g, 6h). Sphinx seated right / Gorgoneion in circular incuse. VF, toned, granular surfaces, irregular flan. Extremely rare, apparently the third known.
In the early-mid 5th century BC, Abydos and Kebren used a very similar reverse type on their coinages, paired with their civic badge on the obverse, an eagle (Abydos) and ram’s head (Kebren). Kebren’s coins of this type typically do not include the city ethnic. The present coin employs the city’s badge, a sphinx, on the obverse, a stylistically similar gorgoneion on the reverse, and no ethnic. The existence of now 3 cities in the Troad striking common coinage suggests that there may have been a monetary alliance or symmachy in existence among them. While it is possible that this coin was minted by another city, the fabric and overall style are consistent with the early coins of Abydos and Kebren. Further, the present coin appeared on the market alongside an early coin of Gergis with a clear ethnic. Jan 07, 2007
