Samos (BC 404-394) Tridrachm4023 viewsca 404 or 394 BC. AR Tridrachm or Double Siglos (11.29g, 12h). The infant Herakles, nude but for a baldric over his left shoulder, kneeling to right on ground line, strangling a serpent with each hand, ΣΥΠ/ Lion's mask facing, ΣΑ below; all within circular incuse. Extremely rare. Toned EF. From the collections of C. Gillet, 1138, R. Jameson, and the Reverend H.V. Elliott, SWH 2/1908, purchased in Asia Minor 1818-1819.
This rare coin was struck to celebrate an alliance (syn = synmachikon = a coin of allies) between cities in western Asia Minor (Byzantion, Ephesos, Iasos, Knidos, Kyzikos, Lampsakos, Rhodes and Samos), which all used the common type of infant Herakles/snakes on obv with rev bearing normal city badge. It was thought that this alliance came about in 394 after the defeat of the Spartan fleet, but Karweise, Lysander as Herakliskos Drakonopnigon ('Herakles the snake-strangler'), NC 1980, has made a good case for it having taken place 10 years earlier, when the cities threw off Athenian domination with the help of the Spartan Lysander. In many ways this seems a better choice, but hoard evidence is inconclusive.Apr 10, 2005

Teos (BC 530-500) Hemidrachm677 viewsca 510 BC. AR Hemidrachm (3.50g). Protome of a winged griffin right, forelegs extended with talons outstretched / Irregular incuse square. Extremely rare. Toned, EF.
From the collections of H.S. von Aulock and R. Jameson. This is a most enigmatic coin, possibly even unpublished. While it was attributed to Teos in von Aulock, Jameson pointed out that griffin protomes were not used there (but cf. coin #557); Balcer excluded it from his corpus (without comment). It could have been minted in Phokaia, as Babelon pointed out in his commentary on a very similar drachm (Traite'), especially since griffin protomes were used on later issues at Phokaia.Apr 10, 2005

Teos (BC 300) Didrachm1112 viewsca 300 BC. AR Didrachm (5.99g). Griffin seated right / Anakreon seated right, plucking a lyre; magistrate [ΠΡ]ΟΚΛΕΙΔΗΣ. Unpublished types. Nicely toned, good VF, strike a bit uneven on the obverse. Unique.
This is the second known example of an Anakreon didrachm, the first being a coin that turned up last year with the magistrate's name Aristonax. The magistrate Prokleides also appears on a drachm that shares its obverse die with an Aristonax drachm (see CNG Auction 55, lot 519). Anakreon (fl. late 6th Century BC) was a lyric poet who was a native of Teos. This issue marks his first appearance on a coin, and in fact this is probably the first appearance of any poet on a coin. Anakreon continued to appear on coins from Teos down through Roman times.Apr 10, 2005

Isaura was the chief city of the region of Isauria, which became part of the province of Cilicia in Severan times. Isaura gained the honorific of Metropolis at some point in this period, and all its Severan coinage has this title. This coin must pre-date the union of the provinces and the elevation of Isaura. The Hercules head is a precise rendition of the type used by Alexander the great, while the identity of the lion rider has remained a mystery since the coin was first published in 1896.Mar 31, 2005
