(BC 282-263) Philetairos I - Tetradrachm3328 viewsPhiletairos I, 282-263 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.85g). Good VF, scattered light porosity, more so on the reverse. Rare.

Westermark attributed this issue to Eumenes I. However, a more recent analysis of hoard evidence has indicated that this coinage is actually struck during the lifetime of Philetairos, near the end of his reign, following the limited issue of tetradrachms bearing the portrait of Seleukos I. (BC 284-263) Philetairos I - Tetradrachm1662 viewsPhiletairos I, 284-263 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.70g). Diademed head of Seleukos I right / ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, holding shield and spear, ivy leaf before, bow behind, A on throne. Good VF, reverse a little rough, with scrapes and light graffiti. Rare.

When Lysimachos established the mint of Pergamon, he entrusted its treasury to the eunuch Philetairos. In the latter 280s BC, Philetairos changed his allegiance to Seleukos I. Shortly thereafter in 281 BC, Lysimachos was defeated by Seleukos at the Battle of Korupedion. Although Seleukos was assassinated the following year, Philetairos continued to acknowledge Seleukid primacy. This coinage, commemorating Seleukos I, was struck while Pergamon was still loyal to the Seleukids, under their king Antiochos I. Houghton & Lorber (SC), citing Le Rider and Newell, assign this coinage to the aftermath of Antiochos' victory over the Galatians, circa 269/8 BC.

Cyprus Uncertain (BC 450) Stater1100 viewsca 450 BC. AR Stater (10.52g). Cow right suckling calf, eagle flying right, "ankh" in right field topped with owl's head / Bull standing right, plow above, owl's head below. Good VF. Extremely rare; one of only three known coins. Ex Geissener Muenzhandlung 44 (4/1989), lot 463.

The examples of this coin are known: this piece, the Paris specimen, and one in a private collection (from Leu 50, lot 216). There is another coin in Paris from the Seyrig Collection which is stuck from the same dies, but in an earlier state, before the dies were recut to add the owl heads. Originally attributed to a Phoenician mint and later an uncertain Cilician mint, M. Amandry has since convincingly argued that the style does not fit the Sidonian origin and directs one to another coin (see Sternberg XVII, 180) possibly from the same obverse die, but with heavier recutting, that has a more Cypriote-appearing reverse.

Nergal was a fearsome Mesopotamian god associated with death; he reigned in the underworld and was the protector of men against pestilence and war. His name survives not only on coinage, but on Akkadian and Elamite inscriptions, and seemingly also in the names of high-ranking Assyrian officials and a Babylonian king of the early 7th cent. BC, Nergal-ushezib. The small tree may be the "sacred tree" that is often the focal point of ceremonies depicted on Neo-Assyrian reliefs and seals.

Tarsos (BC 425-400) Stater - Syennesis III901 viewsca 425-400 BC. AR Stater (10.46g). Satrap on horseback galloping right / Naked hoplite kneeling left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, holding spear in right hand, large round shield decorated with gorgoneion in left, 'TRZ' in Aramaic to right. Toned VF, light porosity.

The hereditary kings of Cilicia were invested with the name Syennesis, a royal title more than an actual name. Syennesis III was probably the grandson of Syennesis II, one of the commanders in the fleet of Xerxes, and married a woman named Epyaxa. In 401 BC, the couple supported the revolt of Cyrus II against his brother Artaxerxes II. In return for the assistance, including a body of troops commanded by his son which he offered to Cyrus, Syennesis was himself richly rewarded with gifts and honors. At the same time, though, he sent his other son to Artaxerxes, so that whatever the outcome he might be with the winning side. Syennesis' actions, however, did little to save Cilicia's independence; after 400 BC, it became a satrapy of the Persian Empire.
