Kyzikos_Lion_Hemiobol.jpg
Kyzikos (BC 550-510) Hemiobol258 viewsca 550 BC. AR Hemiobol (0.46g, 7mm). Head of lion right, holding tunny in mouth / Irregular incuse punch.

Most probably Kyzikos - the image reminds of the early obols of Kyzikos which depict a tunny with fish in its mouth. The lion is not unknown on later coins from Kyzikos and is mostly combined with a tunny - but no other piece shows a lion holding a fish in its mouth. The drawing of the lion differs very much from these later illustrations. It may be suggested that this coin can be dated at the beginning of the coinage of Kyzikos.

Lampsakos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater (or Tetrobol?) 490 viewsca 500-450 BC. EL Hekte (or AR Tetrobol?) (2.31g, 10mm). Forepart of Pegasos right / Quadripartite incuse square. VF. Carr coll.

Very rare and catalogued as pale electrum giving the appearance of being a silver coin. There is some substantial debate surrounding these issues. While a rare coin, there are examples of both the left and right facing Pegasos types in what is both clearly EL and what appears to be solely silver. Would the ancients accept a coin that did not have a strong yellowish tint as true EL? The original description by J.P. Six as EL is followed by CNG (see CNG 94, lot 459) and Roma (this coin). The weight is consistent with a Hekte.

(BC 400-350) Uncertain Satrap - Tetartemorion784 viewsEarly-mid 4th cenutry BC. AR Tetartemorion(?) (6mm, 0.21g). Mylasa mint(?). Head of the Persian Great King left / Stellate pattern of Milesian style. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, porous. Extremely rare.

It is unlikely that this coin was part of a Persian-related issue at Miletos. In the early 4th century, however, the Milesian stellate pattern reverse was revived in the fractional coinage of the Hekatomnid satraps of Caria that were struck at Mylasa. These coins used the Milesian weight standard, which is likely the reason for their revival of that particular stellate type. There are a variety of issues from Caria during the Persian period that used Persian iconography, so it is likely that this coin belongs among these issues, and perhaps was struck under the Hekatomnids at Mylasa.

Phokaia (BC 477-388) B- - EL 1/6 Stater745 viewsca 478-387 BC. EL Hekte (2.51g, 9mm). Laureate head of Zeus left, small seal upwards to right / Quadripartite incuse. Toned, gVF. Carr coll.

This is unlisted in Bodenstedt, but cf. Em. 76 describes 2 examples of a similar portrait without laurel wreath. Two other examples are known from auctions – Roma III, lot 209 and Roma XI, lot 321, both same dies.

Mytilene (BC 521-478) EL 1/12 Stater - B-568 viewsca 530-522 BC. EL Hemihekte (1.25g, 9.4mm). Forepart of winged boar, right / Incuse head of man-headed bull / river god, left. Obverse struck from rusty die, otherwise gVF. Carr coll.

The cataloguer at CNG described this coin as “Unpublished. Unique, and this issue is unknown in any other denomination.” A fascinating and important coin, as it confirms that a fraction, in addition to Hekte, was issued by Mytilene. Bodenstedt suggested a series of fractional emissions could be attributed to Mytilene - these have a calf head facing right on the obverse and incuse square on the reverse. This attribution is disputed by many scholars (see Coin ID #12959). In this context, this new fraction is of significant interest.
