Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater537 viewsca 550-500 BC. EL Hekte (2.66g, 12mm). Winged male mythological creature (Phobos or Daimon) with human body, lion head, griffin’s ears and wings, running/kneeling left, head turned right, holding tunny by tail in left hand / Quadripartite incuse square. NGC graded Choice XF, strike 5/5, surface 4/5, nicely centered, struck from artistic dies. An excellent example of archaic representation of local deity from Asia Minor. Carr coll.

A remarkable mythological type usually known from the stater with the same design. At times identified as Phobos, the personification of terror, the figure may also be the Mithraic divinity Areimanios (Ahriman) as argued by Bivar, "Mithra and Mesopotamia," Mithraic Studies (Manchester, 1975), pp. 275-89.

Lydia Uncertain (BC 4th cent) AE 12971 viewsSardeis? 4th century BC. AE12 (1.5 g, 12h). Head of Dionysios left, wearing ivy wreath / Kantharos; F and S (in Lydian) flanking. Good VF, brown patina. Very rare. Ex Gorny & Mosch 203 (3/2012), lot 197 (Naxos).

In previous sales, this issue has been attributed to either Cycladic Naxos or Syros. While both cities struck coins with same types, all of these cities’ bronzes consistently bear the first two letters of their respective ethnic flanking the base of the kantharos. On this issue, these Greek letters have been replaced by two Lydian letters, allowing its correct attribution to a mint in Lydia. Sardeis is a possibility, as it’s spelling in Lydian was Sfard.

Eikonion (AD 138-161) AE 21 - Antoninus Pius502 viewsAntoninus Pius, 138-161 AD. AE21 (4.97g, 6h). IM-P C T A H ANTONINVS, laureate head of Antoninus Pius right / COL ICO, Athena standing facing, head left, holding Nike presenting wreath, and spear; shield leaning against spear at her feet; in left field, serpent. Very rare. Sandy-black patina. Very fine.

Hans von Aulock knew of seven specimens of this type, all in museum collections. He notes the obverse legend ending ANTONINOC, but this seems unlikely given that the city was a Roman colony since the reign of Hadrian and thus should have been using Latin legends on its coinage. Unfortunately, the single specimen he illustrates is struck off center, the British Museum specimen has incomplete legends, and the rest of the examples he cites are not otherwise published, so the spelling cannot be confirmed. The specimen offered here, though, very clearly spells ANTONINVS, which suggests that Von Aulock's reading is in error.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B90 type 1 391 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.55g, 10mm, 1h). Wreathed head of young Dionysos right/ Facing bald head with long tousled beard swept back, smooth forehead, long pointed (animal?) ears upward, all within linear square. gVF. Carr coll.

Bodenstedt notes 16 obverse and 25 reverse die varieties. His reverse dies can be simplified to small variations of 3 different head types and 4 “motifs” that may occur in the field. The 3 different head types are: small bald head with long tousled beard swept back, smooth forehead, long pointed ears upward; larger head, shaggy hair and close cropped beard and moustache, small ‘animal ears’, furrowed or smooth brow; as previous type but shaggy hair. The 4 “motifs” are additions in the field: ivy leaf, upper right and sometimes lower left corners; grapes, lower left corner – Bodenstedt makes a distinction on basis of a stem being present; 8-armed/beamed star top right corner; and, 8-armed/beamed star top left corner. The reverse legend makes this a very interesting coin. It is best translated to: "[Coin] of the Laodiceans. By decree of the [Roman] Senate holder of a Neocorate." The Neocorate was a honorary title granted to cities that had established a cult for a Roman emperor. It is as such very common, but to our knowledge Laodikeia is the only mint to explicitly mention the Senate decree on its coins that preceded the honorary title. The Polis consequently rewarded the honor by chosing Roma as a reverse type.
