IMP C IMVIP SEV ALEXANDRO AVC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ABΥΔH-NΩ-N, Nude Leander accompanied by Eros with torch, swimming right, crossing the Hellespont (Dardanelles), bust of Hero on top of light tower of Sestos facing left, holding oil lamp in her outstretched right hand to bring light in to the darkness of the night over the Hellespont. Very Fine.

Hero and Leander were one of the most famous lovers in ancient mythology. Hero was a priestess of Aphrodite who lived in the city of Sestos (on the Dardanelles). Leander was a young man from Abydos who lived on the opposite Asian side of the strait. Leander fell in love with Hero, but his parents were against a marriage. He would swim every night across the Hellespont to be with her secretly. Hero always would light a lamp at the top of her tower to guide her lover his way. However, one stormy night the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light. Leander lost his way and drowned. When Hero saw his dead body, she threw herself over the edge of the tower to her death to be with him.

Eight examples known to Bodenstedt. This is the fifth further example to appear at auction. The reverse is an amazing picture puzzle. Examining the reverse of B55 emissions, one can note two different types: one type has an overlap of the heads such that an optical illusions is created where they appear to have a common eye; the other type, each head retains a distinct eye in profile. The overlap of the heads is a reverse that also appears on a later emission, B62 - part of a different series for Bodenstedt.

Tarsos (AD 198-217) AE 33 - Caracalla418 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE33 (20.54g, 12h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Artemis kneeling to right over deer, raising its head with her left hand, right hand poised to plunge dagger into its throat. Very Fine.

Here we see a more familiar depiction of Artemis than that of the Ephesian manifestation (see lot 867). The reverse type depicts Artemis as the goddess of the hunt, about to slay a deer. Homer applies the epithet 'Ποτνια Θηρων' (Mistress of the Animals) to the goddess, and deer in particular were considered sacred to her. In addition to female fertility and virginity, Artemis was associated with certain male activities - in particular the transition from boyhood to manhood and warfare. Perhaps it is these latter associations Caracalla wished to conjure in Tarsos, the city from which he launched his Parthian campaign in AD 216.

The sister of Apollo, Artemis was the virgin huntress worshipped by a cult at Ephesos. This was a wealthy following and her temple in the city was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Destroyed and rebuilt three times before its final destruction, the last incarnation survived into the reign of Gallienus before it was sacked by raiding Goths. The image of the goddess worshipped at Ephesos was distinctly archaic; she was depicted with many breasts, supposedly (and perhaps, incongruously) denoting her fertility. This attribute, along with the usual mural crown denoting the protection of the city walls and the stags which were sacred only to Artemis, can be seen on the reverse type.

There has been much discussion about this fascinating obverse type. While Imhoof-Blumer read the legend as "Imperator Caesar Alexander, dedicator of the rebuilt temple of Asclepius," while Eduardo Levante suggested an alternative reading as "on behalf of the pontifex maximus of the Empire," meaning the greatest high priest of the world.
