Unlike most 10 Assaria issues from this region where the denomination mark is only found on the obverse, some coins from Sillyum place it on both the obverse and the reverse. Its position on the reverse of this coin below the horse at first glance leads on to think that the horse has five legs.

Distinguishing some of the laureate head countermarks from one another is sometimes nearly impossible. Howgego records 93 on coins from Thyateira, but it looks more like 94 which is recorded on coins from Tralles.

The light silvering on this specimen and a specimen that appeared in Stack’s (1/2010, lot 267), suggests that this was perhaps a medallic or commemorative issue, possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos in 129 AD.

This type is missing from the the major published collections but appears on the market from time to time. Changes in style indicate they must have been struck over a considerable time. This earlier issue appears less frequently than the later style coins.
