Assos (BC 420-380) Obol429 views5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (0.42g). Veiled (?) female head left/ ΑΣΣ-ΟΟΝ, griffin right within square linear border within incuse square. VF. Very rare.

The legend allows the assignment of related types. A little later, the same iconography has been assigned to uncertain Lycian dynasts (Traité 245, BMC Lycia 100, Gorny & Mosch 200 (2011), 1926). Presumably, the bronze coins with female/griffin, which were previously set thought from Phocaea (SNG Cop Ionia 1031f.), are minted in Assos.

The first coins with magistrate’s names from Teos came after the lifting of Athenian hegemony over Ionia, upon their final defeat in the Peloponnesian War. It appears that in the first phase, the names were simply engraved over the standard quadripartite incuse type with not much concern over the placement of letters. Later on, the names were added to the wider crossbars of the divided square.

The helmeted head must be that of a hero-warrior. The whole idea of using just a helmeted head with no individuality as a type is quite interesting; that there is a head inside the helmet is clear from the eye that peeks out above the side piece.
