The epithet Asrcaeus (Gr. ἈσκÏαίος) refers to a species of oak tree (Hesychius s.v. ἄσκÏα). Because of the city’s connection with Aphrodite, in the fourth century BC, Knidos acquired a cult-statue of the goddess by the sculptor Praxitiles. After it was rejected by the citizens of Kos (for whom it had been commissioned) because it showed Aphrodite nude for the first time, Knidos purchased the statue, erecting it in an open air temple so that it could be viewed from all angles. As a result, it became a popular tourist attraction and the subject of numerous tales of all types.Jun 23, 2012

As related by Homer (Iliad 18), Achilles’ armor was lost when, still sulking in his tent, he allowed his companion Patroclus to wear it while he spurred the Greeks into a battle on the plains below Troy. Overconfident, Patroclus met Hector in single combat. Mistaking Patroclus for Achilles, the Trojan hero Hector brutally killed him and dragged off Patroclus’ still-armored corpse as a war prize. Kolophon (AD 253-260) AE 32 - Valerian I502 viewsValerian I, 253-260 AD. AE32 (14.48g, 7h). Aelius Severinus, magistrate. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Apollo Klarios seated left, holding laurel branch and lyre, between Artemis to left, holding long torch and with quiver over shoulder, and Nemesis to right, adjusting chiton and holding cubit rule. VF, green-brown patina. Apparently unique, struck with dies of fine style. Group CEM; ex Lanz 30 (11/1984), lot 783.
The type of Apollo Klarios seated left alone is a recurrent reverse design for Colophon. The extended group of gods, as seen here and on some rare earlier issues, must represent a larger sculptural group in the city.Jun 23, 2012

Abydos (BC 470-450) AV Stater6672 viewsca 410 BC. AV Stater (8.58g). ABYΔ/HNON (the lower part of the legend retrograde), eagle standing left / Gorgoneion facing, within an incuse square. Light scrape on reverse edge at 5 o’clock. VF/gVF. Unique and of great importance. Ex ‘Kunstfreund’ Coll., Bank Leu AG & Münzen und Medaillen AG (Zurich, 5/1974), lot 161; ex Monnaies et Médailles SA, Auc. 53 (Basel, 11/1977), lot 92.
Abydos was a colony of Miletos, situated on the Hellespont, and was perhaps an early location of the minting of electrum staters in the sixth century B.C. The city had been part of the Athenian empire during the fifth century until it revolted in 411 B.C., becoming a Spartan ally. This incredible gold stater, the only known example, is of the highest numismatic importance.Jun 18, 2012

Abydos (BC 520-490) EL 1/3 Stater4734 viewsca 500 BC. EL Trite - 1/3 Stater (4.66g). Eagle standing left, with closed wings, looking backwards / Rough incuse punch.
Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second specimen known. Struck on a narrow flan, otherwise aEF.
Attributing uninscribed electrum coins of this period without assured badges is extremely difficult, as is with this trite. Abydos is an obvious possibility since the eagle was a common feature of its coinage. For other common coins see an electrum stater in the British Museum catalogue of Ionia (pl. I, no. 23) (eagle of similar proportions and identical pose, perched upon what is described as a hare). See also some early silver fractions attributed to Abydos with incuse punch reverses (SNG Cop. 1-2; SNG Klein 292), though they show a bird of a different character, without its head reverted.Jun 18, 2012
