(BC 490-460) Uncertain Dynast - Stater349 viewsUncertain dynast, ca 490/80-470/60 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 9.58g). Forepart of boar right / Triskeles in linear square within incuse square. VF, toned, die break and old scuffs under tone on obverse.

This coin defies placement within the early groups defined by Vismara (Falghera), as the obverse style is a match for the Predynastic and Protodynastic A groups, while the reverse (anepigraphic triskeles) is canonical for Protodynastic B. Nevertheless, production of all of these groups overlap in the period 490/80-470/60 BC, to which this coin must belong.

Ionia Uncertain (BC 600-550) Lion 2 - EL 1/24505 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL 1/24 Stater (5mm, 0.57g). Milesian standard. Figural type. Facing lion’s head / Incuse square. Good VF. Rare denomination. Jun 09, 2012

The pellet within the diamond shape on the obverse is similar to the depiction of the eye on some early schematic lion head issues (cf. Weidauer 122 and Elektron II 26). It is therefore possible that these coins constitute a new denomination for that series.

Phokaia (BC 600-522) B06 - EL 1/6 Stater1050 viewsca 625/0-522 BC. EL Hekte (10mm, 2.56g). Helmeted head left; to right, seal upward / Quadripartite incuse square. Near EF. Extremely rare issue, the fifth known.

There are four emissions in Bodenstedt with this type, emissions 6, 15, 30, and 50. The latter three share common characteristics: there is a crest on the helmet, the bowl is adorned with some ornament, the eye is better formed (rather than a dot), and the seal is below the helmet. None of these characteristics are found on the first emission of this type, which features a helmet without crest, no ornamentation on the bowl, an eye formed of a large dot, and the seal placed to the right of the helmet. Additionally, the incuse on the reverse is also distinctly different from the later emissions.

Kebren (BC 520-480) EL 1/24 Stater2399 viewsLate 6th-early 5th centuries BC. EL 1/24 Stater (7mm, 0.69g). Head of ram left / Incuse square punch. Gemini VII, lot 496, otherwise, unpublished. Good VF, light scuff on obverse.

Although there are a few electrum issues known with a ram’s head (cf. Weidauer 50-1 and Boston MFA 1756), all are distinctly different in style from this coin. At the same time, the style of the ram’s head here is a perfect match to the type found on the early silver issues at Kebren (cf. Rosen 531). SNG von Aulock 7775 and NY Sale XX, lot 197 appear to be hektes with this same style.

Fine, black patina, some light roughness.

According to Imhoof-Blumer, this magistrate's name and office also appears on a coin of the same city struck for Severus Alexander. His suggestion that it is a new cognomen is noteworthy, since it may refer to the family's ultimate point of origin, and reflect some connection with Trajan's Dacian Wars. Given the presence of a Dacicus in a position of such prominence and influence almost five decades apart (whether the same individual or, much more likely, relatives), it is clear that the affluence of the Empire of the second century AD allowed for the rapid advancement of former slaves and freedman, so that they too had the wherewithal to perform the duties indicative of the provincial elite. The possibility that Dacicus is some heretofore unknown office is otherwise unsupported.

The attribution is uncertain. Clearly from western Asia Minor, other city names could accord with the portion of the ethnic visible on the coin, but the small trace of the initial letter that is struck up seems to best match a “K”.

Von Aulock’s catalogue of Etenna (in Münzen und Städt Pisidens) records only two types for Julia Paula from Etenna, each of which he knew from only a single specimen. These are the recurring (yet frustratingly enigmatic) types of “female being attacked by serpent as while running past a young male accompanied by dog” for the larger denomination and “two nude males running in opposite directions” for the smaller. The current specimen belongs to the latter denomination.
