For the better part of 4th century BC, Lampsakos issued gold staters with forepart of Pegasus with a variety of obverse types. Few Greek cities were issuing gold at this time, and that Lampsakos was able to start such a project and maintain it for five or six decades, speaks volumes of its wealth and importance. Lampsakos had issued an important group of electrum staters in earlier times. Its gold staters apparently enjoyed wide distribution. Baldwin documented 41 issues of Lampsakene staters in her 1924 study, which is still the standard work. Of these, 8 bore figural types and 32 bore portraits, revealing a preference for the latter category. The chief difficulty Baldwin encountered in ordering the series was the surprising lack of die links between issues; in fact only once was a reverse die carried over from one issue to another, making a global die study impossible. For die studies within each issue, she located 5 examples of Hermes staters that were struck with 5 obverse and 4 reverse dies.

Acquired from Spink´s in April 1970. This is one of the very few known examples of the late 4th century didrachm coinage of Kyme. One example signed by a different magistrate is in the BM and one was sold by NFA in 1976, which may well have been struck from the same dies as the present piece but is so corroded that it is impossible to be sure.

(BC 182-149) Prusias II - Tetradrachm 750 viewsPrusias II Cynegos, 182-149 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.79g, 12h), Nikomedeia mint. PGB coll.

Prusias II was a king about whom little good can be said. His epithet means “the Hunter” and that was the activity he liked most. As his reign went on, he became more and more disliked; he was killed after his much more attractive son Nikomedes revolted against him and took over the throne to universal acclaim.

Very rare. Virtually as struck. Ex Gemini I (1/2005), 162 and Lanz 102 (5/2001), 267, and from the collections of The Johns Hopkins University and J. W. Garrett, Bank Leu and Numismatic Fine Arts (10/1984), 266, C. S. Bement, Naville VII (6/1924), 1458 and T. Prowe, Egger 46 (5/1914), 949, and ex Hirsch 16 (12/1906), 636.

The letter delta on the obverse is the denomination mark and stands for four diobols or an octobol (smaller pieces valued at two and four obols are also known). These coins were primarily for local use at the time when the city produced its extensive issues of stephanophoric tetradrachms.

Uncertain (BC 600-550) EL Hekte2260 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL Hekte (2.73g), probably on the Phokaian weight standard. Scorpion / Irregular incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unknown. Some minor marks, otherwise EF. Ex Gorny & Mosch 190 (10/2010), 245.

This is an extraordinary piece, quite clearly on the Phokaian standard (as is the piece in the Leu sale - there are lighter electrum pieces with scorpions, as Weidauer 170, but they seem to be on the Milesian standard). The possibility that this piece may have been produced in Thrace or Macedon, given the well known bee that is found on uncertain silver coins from that area (CNG Auction 88, 75) is not unlikely, especially given the rather rough incuse square. There is also a very similar scorpion on some slightly later silver coins that are now also attributed to northern Greece since some have been found there (as SNG Copenhagen 377 and SNG con Aulock 6664 - both published as being from Asia Minor).
