Kition (BC 400) AE 9382 viewsUncertain king, 4th century BC. AE9 (0.81g, 6h). Herakles advancing right, lion skin draped over arm, holding club overhead and [bow and arrow in extended hand]; ankh to lower left / Facing gorgoneion. VF, green-brown patina.

Although this issue is unpublished, the obverse type, especially paired with the ankh, is canonical for many issues of the kings of Kition from the late 5th century BC.

Uncertain (BC 200-100) Drachm?769 views2nd century BC. AR Drachm(?) (2.04g, 14mm, 12h). Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Eagle, with spread wings, standing right on thunderbolt; T to right. VF, find patina, some porosity.

The types on this issue are fairly common in the regions of southwest Asia Minor, Caria, Phrygia, and Lycia. The combination of these two types on a single issue, however, is unknown. At the same time, only one city, Kibyra in Phrygia, used both of these types on its coinage (cf. SNG von Aulock 3719 and 3720). Attribution to that city, though, is doubtful as all of its known issues bear the city ethnic.

Uncertain Satrap (BC 4th cent) Satrap - Obol599 views4th century BC. AR Obol (0.79g, 10mm, 8h). Draped bust, wearing satrapal headdress, facing slightly left; star to left / Crowned and draped female bust left. EF, toned, obverse struck off center. Very rare.

The proposed attribution of this type to Evagoras II, originally made in the 19th century, is likely incorrect (cf. SNG Kayhan 1066 for a similar obol historically attributed to Evagoras). Interestingly, although Gökturk 88 retains the attribution to Evagoras II, Gökturk 52, another obol certainly related to this type, is placed at an uncertain mint in Cilicia.

Soloi (BC 333-323) Stater649 viewsBalakros, Satrap, 333-323 BC. AR Stater (10.96g, 25mm, 2h). Baaltars seated left, holding lotus-tipped scepter; grain ear and grape bunch to left; B to right, Σ (engraved over M) below throne / Draped bust of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet. Near EF, some porosity.

This interesting series of Balakros has been traditionally assigned to various Cilician mints based on the appearance of the letter below the throne. More recent research, as yet unpublished, suggests that all of these coins were actually struck at a central mint, most likely Tarsos. Close similarity of style of many coins assigned to different mints strongly supports this hypothesis (see, e.g., SNG France 197 and 410). The present coin provides even more compelling evidence for this conclusion, as the Σ below the throne is clearly engraved over an M (SNG France 197 is the same die, but the M has deteriorated in the die to the point of not being clear). Of course, an argument could be made that a die was transferred from Mallos, but it seems unlikely for such a prolific mint as Soloi.

(BC 520-480) Uncertain Dynast - 1/2 Stater?916 viewsca 521-478 BC. AR Drachm (4.12g, 14mm). Forepart of winged bull right / Quadripartite incuse square divided diagonally. Good VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare. Ex Leu 65 (5/1996), lot 202.

Leu sale attributed this issue to an uncertain mint in Ionia, noting the similarity of the style to the archaic issues of Klazomenai that feature a winged boar forepart. It is also similar in style to various winged boar foreparts on contemporary issues at Mytilene. While agreeing with these comparisons, the weight of this example and its diagonally divided incuse are more consistent with issues of Lesbos than Ionia. The bull is also a common type used at Mytilene, but relatively rare among issues in Ionia. Finally, in addition to using winged boars, Mytilene used winged lions, so the appearance of a winged bull would not be surprising (especially as all motifs are common in eastern/Persian art). So, while the attribution to Mytilene is conjectural, the preponderance of the evidence weighs greater in its favor than than to a mint in Ionia.

Memnon (BC 350-334) AE 13388 viewsMemnon of Rhodes?, ca 350-334 BC. AE13 (1.97g, 12h). Persian king or hero in kneeling-running right, holding spear and bow / Two concentric squares, a line projecting out from one side of outer square. VF, dark brown patina.

From at least the early 1900s, this type has been traditionally assigned to Memnon of Rhodes, but there is no evidence to substantiate such a specific attribution. The style of the obverse links it to the “map” issues of the Achaemenid satraps in Ionia, which have been dated to circa 350-333 BC.
