Bodenstedt interpreted the male head on the reverse as a Daktylos or Telchine, both from mythical bands of miners and blacksmiths, sometimes described as having a sinister character. (A common feature of mythical blacksmiths - Hephaestus is the exception, but he was physically handicapped instead). The object at the forehead could be something like a miner's lamp, but this is by no means confirmed.

The types of the early electrum of Samos are varied. The Samians had a unique style of coinage, with the central type placed against an amorphic patterned background. Various decriptions have been offered for the types-eagles, flowers, panthers, thunderbolts, etc. This cataloguer sees a flowering plant with two leaves, and a panther facing left below. The use of background ornament somewhat resembles the geometric patterns used as filling ornament on Corinthian pottery.

Kebren (BC 450) Hemidrachm1678 viewsca 480 BC. AR Hemidrachm (1.78g). Head of ram right; below, lizard right / Forepart of bull right within incuse square. Good VF, toned. Well struck on good metal. Ex Triton VI (1/2003), lot 390; Leu 42 (5/1987), lot 294; Niggeler Coll. (Leu/Münzen und Medaillen, 12/1965), lot 396; R. Jameson Coll., 2295.

The Boston and Jameson catalogs attributed this type to Samos, although Barron did not include this coinage in his corpus of Samian coinage. Presumably, the earlier catalogs’ attribution was based on the parallel of the reverse type to various issues at Samos. The obverse type, however, with its small lizard control device, stands in contrast to such an attribution, and without further evidence, an attribution to Samos must be viewed as speculative.

Kyzikos (BC 398-395) Tetradrachm - Pharnabazos2079 viewsPharnabazos, Persian Satrap and military commander, ca 398-396/5 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 14.67g, 2h). ΦAR-N-[A]-BA, head of Pharnabazos right, weaing satrapal cap tied below his chin, and diadem / Ornate ship’s prow left, decorated with a griffin and prophylactic eye; before and aft, two dolphins downward; below, tunny left. Good VF, toned, slightly granular surface. Very rare, Maffre located thirteen extant examples, eight of which are in museum collections. Ex Giessener Münzhandlung 69 (11/1994), lot 276a.

Struck during the period of warfare between Spartans and Persians, this issue commenced after Pharnabazos received the responsibility for the management of the Achaemenid navy in 398 BC, and ended with the temporary closure of the mint in 396 BC due to the Spartan presence in the area. Maffre's die study suggests that, although only 13 examples are known today, the coinage was quite massive and instrumental in facilitating Pharnabazos' naval success that culminated in the Battle of Knidos.
