Laodikeia (AD 211-217) AE 42 - Caracalla771 viewsCaracalla, 211-217 AD. AE42 - Medallion (49.16g, 6h). L. Aelius Pigres, Asiarch. Struck 214-217 AD. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Λ AIΛ ΠIΓPHC ACIAPX Γ ANЄΘHKЄN, • ΛAOΔIKЄΩN/NЄΩKOPΩN in exergue, emperor standing right on steps of distyle temple, holding wreath in right hand; on either side, pair of togate figures raising hand in acclamation; behind, troops standing, holding shields and spears; all within precinct enclosure, seen from aerial perspective; enclosure entrance composed of six columns; figure of Hygieia, holding serpent, standing in outer intercolumnations; uncertain figures (Pigres and spouse?) standing facing in central intercolumnation. VF, brown surfaces. An attractive architectural type and extremely rare.

This medallion commemorates an otherwise unknown address of the emperor Caracalla to the leading citizens of Laodicea during that emperor’s advance across Asia Minor to meet the Persians. This issue appears to have been struck as a personal dedication of the Asiarch, as evidenced by the reverse legend.

Akmoneia (AD 251-253) AE 27 - Volusian563 viewsVolusian, 251-253 AD. AE27 (10.89g, 6h). AVT K OVIB AΦ ΓAΛΛOC OYOΛOYCIANOC, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / AKMO/ NЄΩN, Horseman, holding whip, on galloping horse right; below horse, river-god Sindros reclining left; to right, two females (deities, or personifications of nature) standing left on rocky outcropping. VF, black-green patina with earthen overtones. Ex Alighieri Coll.

The main figure of the horseman, in association with the presonifications of the river-god and the presence of the female figures (whether themselves personifications of the surrounding countryside, or actual individuals), may represent an otherwise unknown foundation myth for Acmoneia.

Sala (AD 211-217) AE 28 – Caracalla556 viewsCaracalla, 211-217 AD. AE28 (12.43g, 6h). Val. Moloxos, archon α´. AV K M AV ANTONЄINOC (sic), laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / ЄΠI OVAΛ MO ΛOΞ OV APX A CAΛH NΩN •, Hygieia, holding serpent and phiale, standing right, and Asclepius, leaning on serpent-entwined staff, standing left; between, small figure of Telesphorus. Good VF, dark green and red-brown patina. Very rare.

On this coin the letter “o” in Caracalla’s official name, Antoninus, is a clearly engraved omicron, rather than the omega more regularly encountered. Under a lens, however, the additional line visible suggests that the celator may have attempted to correct his mistake; as it proceeds over the letter and partially into the field, this line, however, may be part of a serendipitous die break.
