Exremely rare. Unpublished. Beautiful dark green patina, good very fine.
This coin being the only proof of an before unknown alliance (homonoia) connection in between Isinda and Ephesos. The inhabitans of Isinda traced their origins back to Ionia. Other contemporary coins propagate (Aulock, Pisidien Nr. 868ff.) their Ionian descent. On the reverse of our coin, the local hero is clasping hands with the cult statue of Artemis Ephesia. This hero from which no name is known is normally depicted on horseback, also always accompanied by snake. Where the hero might have been described as “the snakekiller†our coin makes this impossible as here the snake is peacefully entwining the hero’s staff. Hans von Aulock was right to describe the animal as a local protective deity. The serpent staff reminds of the Asklepios staff so it is save to assume that our local deity must have been a heeling god.Dec 08, 2008

Mithras, the central god of the syncretic Hellenistic mystery religion known as Mithraism, was of Persian origin. There, known as Mithra, he served as a mediator between the supreme god Ahura-Mazda and humankind. His attributes were varied, but he soon became associated as a divinity of light and much of the symbolism of the mystery cult that developed around him is cosmologic. The chief participants of the cult were the military, attracted to the masculine aspect of the god and his selfless sacrifice to duty.Nov 30, 2008

Mytilene (AD 5) AE 17 - Theophanes & Archedamis1323 viewsTime of Augustus, circa 5 AD. Theophanes, with Archedamis, died 44-36 BC. AE17 (5.91g, 12h). ΘЄOC ΘЄOΦANHC, bare head of Theophanes right / ΘЄA APXЄΔAMIC, draped and veiled bust of Archedamis right. Fine, rough orichalchum surfaces, flan flaw on obverse. Rare.
According to Plutarch (Vit. Pomp. 42), the historian and politician Theophanes of Mytilene was a friend and political ally of Pompey. Such was the influence of Theophanes that he was able to secure in 62 BC the independence of Mytilene from the triumvir. Following his death, sometime between 44 and 36 BC, Theophanes, along with Archedamis (presumably his wife), were accorded divine honors in recognition for their benefaction. The date of this coinage is uncertain, but it was probably issued circa 5 AD when M. Pompeius Theophanes, a descendent of the earlier Theophanes and a friend of Tiberius was procurator of Asia, but certainly the coins predate 33 AD, when Tiberius ordered the execution of Theophanes’ remaining descendents, and forbade any public reference to the now-outlawed family (Tac. Ann. 6.18).Nov 26, 2008

Poimanenon (AD 244-249) AE 26 - Otacilia Severa720 viewsOtacilia Severa, Augusta, 244-249 AD. AE26 (11.38g, 9h). Draped bust right, wearing stephane / Artemis advancing right, drawing bow from quiver and holding bow; at feet, hound leaping right. VF, brown patinas. Extremely rare. Ex CNG 51 (9/1999), lot 870.
Artemis and her twin Apollo were the children of Zeus and Leto. A confirmed virgin, Artemis inhabited the woodland areas with her followers, hunting wild animals and scrupulously avoiding male company. She can be seen with her hunting-dog at her side, and the symbol most often associated with her is the stag, a possible association with the myth of Actaeon. At Ephesus the Artemesion, a huge temple complex whose initial construction dated back to the Bronze Age, and which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was her major cultic shrine.Nov 26, 2008

Hipparchus the Astronomer is honored on a few rare issues from Nicaea, where he was born circa 190 BC. Kibyra (AD 54-68) AE 19 - Marcellus1209 viewsTime of Nero, 54-68 AD. AE19 (4.66g, 6h). Marcellus, legate(?). Ex Villemur Coll.; ex Malter XXXIV (12/1986), lot 371; ex Knobloch Coll. (Stack's, 6/1970), lot 376.
Other than that his name was Marceullus, the identity of and office held by the individual depicted on this issue is uncertain. Certainly he held office worthy of this coinage, but during this period, no Marcellus is known to have served as a proconsul in Asia, nor is there any other reference to such an individual having served in any other important capacity. The only possibility that seems plausible is that he was a legate dispatched to attend to some important duty in Asia in the mid-1st century AD.Nov 26, 2008

According to Euripides (Bacchae 461-464), Mount Tmolus was the birthplace of the god Dionysus. The son of Zeus and Semele (a princess of Thebes), Dionysus was a god of fertility, vegetation and wine. He is often depicted being transported in a car drawn either by panthers, or (as in this case) by centaurs, surrounded by an entourage of satyrs, sileni, maenads, and nymphs. A number of important festivals were held in his honor; most famous were the Lesser or Rural Dionysia (in late December), the Greater or City Dionysia (in late spring), the Anthesteria (in early spring), and the Lenaea (in winter). His characteristic worship was ecstatic, and women, known as maenads, were prominently involved. Votaries, through music, dancing, and drinking, and through eating flesh and blood of sacrificial animals, attempted to merge their identities with the wildness of nature. Nov 22, 2008
