Phokaia (BC 600-522) EL 1/6 Stater665 viewsca 625/0-522 BC. EL Hekte (2.59g, 9mm). Mother seal swimming to left with a young swimming to right below, each with annulet above. / Rough incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unique, a wonderful coin with an incredibly charming obverse. Nearly extremely fine.
The name Phokaia is derived from the Greek word Φωκάι, which translates as 'seals' and is still found, as a Greek loanword, in the modern Latinian languages today (fr. 'phoque', it./span./portug. 'foca'). Unsurprisingly, the lovely animals served as a badge on Phokaia's coins, most commonly in the form of a small seal below or behind a larger main type. The earliest coinage of the city, however, still retains the seal as main type: on the present example, we find one of the most charming renderings of animals in all of Archaic Greek coinage, in the form of a mother seal swimming to the left with her young heading to the right below. The fact that mother and child swim in opposite directions gives the scenery an enchanting playfulness that almost certainly derives from personal observation by the artist - perhaps he was watching the animals romping around the small islands in the bay before Phokaia?Nov 23, 2019

Magnesia (BC 458-420) Tetrobol354 viewsca 465-400 BC. AR Tetrobol (15mm, 2.14g, 3h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm horse standing facing left, head to right / Eagle flying right; around, uncertain letters (?). Of the highest rarity, the better of two known. Slightly porous, otherwise VF.
CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on our example do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date.Jul 25, 2018

Magnesia (BC 458-420) Trihemiobol219 viewsThemistokles(?), ca 465-459 BC. AR Obol (0.88g). Male figure standing left extending right arm to a horse standing facing, head left / Eagle flying right. Unpublished. VF, toned, struck from worn dies, minor porosity. Possibly unique.
This coin appeared in the market alongside known issues of Themistokles and his son, Archepolis, but does not appear in Nollé & Wenninger’s corpus of their coinage, nor has another appeared in the recent sales of their coinage. While the obverse type is novel, a similar reverse type of an eagle flying appears on issues of both rulers. Additionally, the general style and fabric of the flan is consistent with Themistokleian issues.Jul 25, 2018

This coin appears to belong to a diverse series of electrum staters struck on the Milesian standard that Kraay (ACGC p. 30), and others, have tentatively attributed to the period of the Ionian Revolt. Although none have ethnics, the obverses of many of the coins are of types common to various cities involved in the revolt. Kraay notes the significant problem with the theory is that none of these coins feature a type attributable to Miletos, the city that led the revolt, but he proposed that it was possible the entire series was struck there as a centralized mint. Thus the types could either represent the cities that contributed resources to the revolt or successive Milesian officials who oversaw the coinage production. If the obverse type does represent the city, this issue would most likely belong to Klazomenai, all of whose contemporary coinage featured a winged-boar forepart.Jun 13, 2018
