Silandos (AD 161-169) AE 34 - Lucius Verus375 viewsLucius Verus, 161-169 AD. AE34 (24.87g, 6h). Aulus Attalianus, strategus. Fine, black patina, some light roughness.
According to Imhoof-Blumer, this magistrate's name and office also appears on a coin of the same city struck for Severus Alexander. His suggestion that it is a new cognomen is noteworthy, since it may refer to the family's ultimate point of origin, and reflect some connection with Trajan's Dacian Wars. Given the presence of a Dacicus in a position of such prominence and influence almost five decades apart (whether the same individual or, much more likely, relatives), it is clear that the affluence of the Empire of the second century AD allowed for the rapid advancement of former slaves and freedman, so that they too had the wherewithal to perform the duties indicative of the provincial elite. The possibility that Dacicus is some heretofore unknown office is otherwise unsupported.May 08, 2012

Tralleis (BC 27-AD 14) AE 20 - Augustus & Caius Caesar472 viewsAugustus, with Caius Caesar, 27 BC-14 AD. AE20 (5.71g, 12h). Struck circa 2 BC. KAIΣA-PEΩN, bare head of Augustus right / ΓAIOΣ [KAIΣAP], bare head of Caius right. Near VF, dark greenish-brown patina. Extremely rare and apparently unrecorded.
RPC 2646 (itself apparently unique) is different in several respects: both obverse and reverse legends run in opposite directions, with the ethnic being completely behind the bust of Augustus, there is no star on the reverse, and the bust of Caius is enclosed within a wreath. The reverse of the current coin is of the same design as that of the obverses of 2649 and 2650, dated to ca 2 BC, and provides a link between RPC 2646, dated very tentatively to ca 10-5 BC, and the supposed later types. All are very likely from the same issue, which is probably no earlier than 2 BC.Oct 29, 2011
