Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Λ AIΛ ΠIΓPHC ACIAPX Γ ANЄΘHKЄN, • ΛAOΔIKЄΩN/NЄΩKOPΩN in exergue, emperor standing right on steps of distyle temple, holding wreath in right hand; on either side, pair of togate figures raising hand in acclamation; behind, troops standing, holding shields and spears; all within precinct enclosure, seen from aerial perspective; enclosure entrance composed of six columns; figure of Hygieia, holding serpent, standing in outer intercolumnations; uncertain figures (Pigres and spouse?) standing facing in central intercolumnation. VF, brown surfaces. An attractive architectural type and extremely rare.

This medallion commemorates an otherwise unknown address of the emperor Caracalla to the leading citizens of Laodicea during that emperor’s advance across Asia Minor to meet the Persians. This issue appears to have been struck as a personal dedication of the Asiarch, as evidenced by the reverse legend.

VF, black-green patina with earthen overtones. Ex Alighieri Coll.

The main figure of the horseman, in association with the presonifications of the river-god and the presence of the female figures (whether themselves personifications of the surrounding countryside, or actual individuals), may represent an otherwise unknown foundation myth for Acmoneia.

The inscription shows this issue was produced at the expense of P. Claudius Attalus (Π ΚΛ ΑΤΑΛΟC), described as 'high priest' (APXIEPATEYΩN) and credited with paying for this coinage (ANEΘHKE ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ). Attalus, perhaps a distant descendant of the Pergamene kings and a distinguished man, held citizenship at both Laodicea and Smyrna. On some coins struck at Smyrna he is described as COΦICTHC ('sophist'), meaning he was a salaried teacher of philosophy and rhetoric.

The depicted chest is the symbol of Kibyra. Because KIBΩTON (Greek for wooden case or chest) was used in the NT for Noah's Ark, it was suggested that Kibyra was the place where Noah landed after the Flood. Therefore it became a famous site of pilgrimage.

Lairbenos is a pre-Greek name of Apollo from Asia Minor. Some put it to 'labrys' = double axe, others to Hetitian 'labarnas' = master. But more possibly it is a toponymikon or ethnikon. There are several sanctuaries of Lairbenos in Phrygia with numerous votive inscriptions especially in Dionysopolis and Motela.

Marsyas playing the auloi, the typical double-flute. But actually the auloi was not a simple flute but a tongued instrument so more like an oboe. Both parts often were tuned in the distance of an octave but that could be changed. Here you can clearly see the grip holes.
