The epithet Asrcaeus (Gr. ἈσκÏαίος) refers to a species of oak tree (Hesychius s.v. ἄσκÏα). While the oak was an associated attribute of Zeus, the reference here may refer to a Prehellenic Carian nature deity, similar to the later mythological Dryads, or nymphs who inhabited the trees (δÏÏες). Apollonius Dyscolus (Historia mirabilium 13) states that a goat was sacrificed to him.Jun 23, 2012

Because of the city’s connection with Aphrodite, in the fourth century BC, Knidos acquired a cult-statue of the goddess by the sculptor Praxitiles. After it was rejected by the citizens of Kos (for whom it had been commissioned) because it showed Aphrodite nude for the first time, Knidos purchased the statue, erecting it in an open air temple so that it could be viewed from all angles. As a result, it became a popular tourist attraction and the subject of numerous tales of all types.Jun 23, 2012

Three Carian cities - Alinda, Alabanda, and Stratonicea - commemorated the marriage between Caracalla and Plautilla by issuing coins with dual portraits proclaiming the young empress as “the new goddess Hera.†As Ken Harl notes (Civic Coins and Civic Politics in the Roman East: A.D. 180-275 [Berkeley, CA: University of California Press], p. 41): “By implication, Caracalla was envisioned as a youthful Zeus, so that the imperial marriage became a symbolic reenactment of the celestial one.â€Jun 23, 2012

The lion's paw fractions are traditionally attributed to Lydia, since the lion was the Lydian royal badge. J. Spier, Studies Price, pp. 327-334, has discovered several reverse-punch links between lion's paw fractions and some Ionian issues, but this might only mean that the linked coinages were produced by the same team of workers, who carried the same reverse punches from one job to the next.
