Perge (AD 161-169) AE 34 - Lucius Verus290 viewsLucius Verus, 161-169 AD. AE34 (25.97g, 12h). Laureate bust left, slight drapery / ΠЄPΓAIΩ-N, galley sailing left over waves; large Triton ornament at prow, eight rowers on deck, steersman and two signa at stern; in exergue, from left to right: two fish, dolphin, and either a third fish or turtle. Near VF, brown surfaces, minor roughness.

An extremely rare and interesting type. The designs on the coinage of Perge are principally devoted to religious subjects, particularly to Artemis, who had an important cult center at Perge. This galley type, very reminiscent of ships on some Hadrianic sestertii, presumably alludes to the importance of Perge as a center of maritime trade. We see the type repeated on an equally rare issue of Septimius Severus (see here).

An interesting type which copies a very identifiable shrine found on the coinage of Antioch. The engraver even went so far as to copy the “Δ Є” found on the Antiochene types, which is generally thought to stand for the office of the emperor as tribune (Δημαρχικης Єξουςιας) or, more likely, for the four eparchies (Δ Єπαρχειων) which the Antiochene coinage would circulate in: Commagene, Coele-Syria, Syria, and Phoenicia.

Side (AD 166-177) AE 19 - Commodus347 viewsCommodus, as Caesar, 166-177 AD. AE19 (3.52g, 6h). AVT KAIC Λ A KOMMOΔON, bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right / CI ΔH T ωN, Athena standing facing, head left, extending hand and holding spear. Good VF, green patina. Apparently unique. Group CEM.

This coin is quite possibly the first coin of Commodus issued anywhere. His earliest issues at Rome are conventionally dated to AD 175, but are certainly struck after he attained the title of Germanicus in AD 172. This coin, however, shares a reverse die with an issue of Lucius Verus (SNG France 807), and it is unlikely that this die would have been retained so long after Verus died in AD 169. As this piece does not exhibit significant die wear, it is more likely that it was struck concurrently with the issue of Verus, while Commodus was Caesar, ca AD 166-169.

By the time of Aurelian, the minting of provincial bronzes had all but ceased outside of Alexandria, being limited to a handful of mints in Pisidia and Pamphylia. Under Aurelian's successor Tacitus, almost 300 years of the minting of provincial bronze coinages comes to an end with a final issue from Perga.

RPC only records two specimens for this issue. As the portrait on the obverse is not identified, the authors of RPC leave open the possibility that this could represent a later emperor, perhaps Domitian or Trajan. This cataloguer thinks the portrait looks more like a young Nero than either of the other two.

Unlike most 10 Assaria issues from this region where the denomination mark is only found on the obverse, some coins from Sillyum place it on both the obverse and the reverse. Its position on the reverse of this coin below the horse at first glance leads on to think that the horse has five legs.
